I think there are loads of people who simply didn't expect to grow up. I know I didn't - if it wasn't done by a flock of geese flying across the radar some conflict would get out of control. It was quite an odd time wasn't it? We were quite CND round our gaff - I remember 'Protect and Survive' being on sale in the stationers and my Dad saying that it was a load of rubbish and that if a nuclear war threatened he would drive us all to our nearest big city as 'the living would envy the dead' - this was an informal chat over Sunday lunch - I would have been very surprised to hear that I would get to the age I am (42). A while ago I was on a works do and was chatting to a mates hubby (Police Officer and rugby player) who after a few drinks said that he often used to hear police car sirens and think that it was WWIII! It's rather surprising to think we all did our O & A Levels really. Remember call coming thru on Greenham telephone tree as a 15 yr old when first cruise missiles went walkabout. As this wasn't on the news it seemed v. sinister - read in nature magazine Greenham Common is now a lovely nature reserve - must go for picnic

I made endless plans in my mind when I as a kid about this. My most troubling thought wasnt about what would happen to the rest of my family but what would I do with my dogs poo if we had to spend weeks under the stairs?!

I was petrified.
We had bloody nuclear attack drills at school

I was always worried about whether the cat would have to be left outside.

My Mum hoarded tins for years, and Dad never ever had less than half a tank of petrol in the car 'just in case we need to get away at night'.

God.

Shivering.
