I thought I heard something about this today. Thought I was hearing things.

JanH · 21/02/2005 22:19

Link here .

lilsmum · 21/02/2005 22:20

sorry, i am really thick...who is hunter s thompson?

NotQuiteCockney · 21/02/2005 22:21

He's a famous-ish American writer. I'm a bit upset about this, actually, I was a fan.

ThomCat · 21/02/2005 22:21

He wrote Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas.

I wonder why he shot himself, how terribly sad

blimey. actually I didn't know he was still alive.

JanH · 21/02/2005 22:23

????

Twiglett · 21/02/2005 22:27

you can't really be shocked at that news can you?

expatinscotland · 21/02/2005 22:27

No big shocker there.

JanH · 21/02/2005 22:29

He was only 67 - looks about 80 in those pics - must have had a very hard life

brinkley · 21/02/2005 22:31

R.I.P. Hunter

NotQuiteCockney · 21/02/2005 22:31

Yeah, I'd say the question is why now, and not before?

I loved (some of) his writing, but he was a bit of a nutjob with some interesting drug habits, who liked guns.

For those who don't know him, the Duke character on Doonesbury is loosely based on him.

NotQuiteCockney · 21/02/2005 22:33

Oh, he was really cute when young. here .

ThomCat · 21/02/2005 23:28

I'm not overly shocked, but yeah I'm a bit 'OMG'. Someone just shot themselves dead, i'm not gonna say 'ohhh, really, yeah thought he might do that'!

Still sad news whether you're shocked or not right?

Sad
Mirage · 22/02/2005 13:01

I liked his writing & will miss him,but can't say I'm shocked.I couldn't imagine him as an old, decrepid man somehow.

piffle · 22/02/2005 13:08

I was yelling at radio 2 earlier, ken bruce had copy of the Indie and was asking why is an american authors death on the entire front page of a daily - (to my mind sure beats putting Dubya on the front page )
Go buy the Sun then you twit!!!!!
Honestly

suzywong · 22/02/2005 13:10

I wonder if my special boyfriend Johnny Depp will be going to the memorial (god I'm shallow)

NomDePlume · 22/02/2005 13:10

"I loved (some of) his writing, but he was a bit of a nutjob with some interesting drug habits, who liked guns." NotQuiteCockney summed it all up for me

Jimjams · 22/02/2005 20:18

I'll always remember my friend's comment after reading fear and loathing "you can't help thinking that if only he didn't take quite so many drugs things would be a bit easier".

RIP Hunter. (am i the only person who found fear and loathing boring, perhaps I'll read again out of respect).

happymerryberries · 22/02/2005 20:23

Do you think he would have made the font page is he was a novelist, rather than a journalist?

And Jimjams, you are not alone, I didn't like fear and Loathing much either.

Tinker · 22/02/2005 20:24

Must admit, I was querying why the Indy had devoted its whole front page to it this morning. And then discovered 2 more inside. I mean, it's not really the most important news of the day is it? Found F&L dull as well but felt I had to read it when I was about 20 or whatever I was at teh time

SofiaAmes · 22/02/2005 21:07

Whatever you think of his writing (I'm not a fan) he was considered an icon of the vietnam era. His writing style was considered different and groundbreaking and reflected with great accuracy major changes in sentiment and attitude ocurring in the usa (and probably elsewhere as well) at the time.
