Has anyone commented on the David Cameron-speech on moral neutrality? He is a price-dick, isn't he?

Very, very lazy to use "Etonian" like this. It is an incredible school, and all of the Etonians I know are intelligent, charming, knowlegable and interested in the world around them (in stark contrast to most of the twats I shared my northern comprehensive with).

Tony Blair went to Fettes, but no-one would dare argue that because he went to public school he couldn't connect with ordinary people.

Lazy, lazy, lazy.

SqueakyPop · 09/07/2008 17:49

Well said, PB

chocolatedot · 09/07/2008 17:55

PB, that's my point too. Surely if people hate Old Etonions its because of what the school is seen to represent (bastion of wealth and privelege etc) rather than anything specific to the school. So if that's the case then you should take the time to acquaint yourselves with the top public schools i order to extend your prejudice to graduates of all of them rather than just Eton. There are an awful lot of other schools just as posh, just as expensive and just as hard to get into (Fettes for one).

I'm really glad DC has said he's not ashamed of his background. In this day and age, nobody should be whether they're the son of a Lord or a street sweeper.

MsDemeanor · 09/07/2008 17:57

What horrible posts aimed at Riven, who knows a fuck of a lot more about struggling than that fat-faced overpriveleged ivory-tower-dwelling Cameron. I feel very cross that she has to put up with sneering like this when not one of us would want to take two steps in her shoes, let alone walk a mile in them.
Actually, with his experience of a severely disabled child, I am sure even Cameron would not stoop so low.

SqueakyPop · 09/07/2008 17:58

I believe that DC has a disabled child of his own. He knows or is able to extrapolate quite realistically.

PennyBenjamin · 09/07/2008 17:58

It's just the assumption which makes me very cross - if you don't like someone's politics, then don't vote for them, but don't assume you know all about someone because of the school they went to.

When I look at people I hope I see the person, not the background, and I hope people would do the same to me. It is ridiculous that someone intelligent and capable and willing to get invovled (unlike most) should be judged on their school! And yes, DC has views that some people wont like, but he's a tory - it's not like he's hiding it!

If you are going to reply to a post SP, I suggest you read it first
"Actually, with his experience of a severely disabled child, I am sure even Cameron would not stoop so low."

And I think your comments aimed at riven were spectacularly low and disasteful. You should be ashamed of yourself.

SqueakyPop · 09/07/2008 18:02

How so, McD? I don't think I ever referred to Riven's personal circumstances. I rarely get personal on BBs.

"Have some vinegar with your chips' strikes me as a very nasty little line. What are her 'chips' exactly? Her severely disabled four year old daughter? Her own disability?

SqueakyPop · 09/07/2008 18:05

But 90% of the general population have no direct experience of poverty.

Unfortunately, there are not enough of those who both have direct experience of poverty and experience of a decent level of education to become a leader of the country.

And, at the end of the day, it's about "the economy, stupid", so an experience of creating wealth is rather more valuable to the country.

MsDemeanor · 09/07/2008 18:06

Hey she can defend herself perfectly eloquently, but frankly, if you are pushing the line that people in favour of public schools and Etonians are the very model of compassion and tolerance, you aren't doing yourself any favours.

SqueakyPop · 09/07/2008 18:07

Shoulder, MsD

MsDemeanor · 09/07/2008 18:07

And DC's experience of 'creating wealth' is...??

An empathy for creating wealth, MsD, not necessarily a direct experience.

Heck, they should all be physicists, right, because that is the most important thing the country needs? No, we are not suggesting that. We want public servants who have an appreciation as to what's important and are able to identify appropriate talents. Teamwork.

MsDemeanor · 09/07/2008 18:11

Doesn't matter to you, clearly.
But do you decide what matters to everyone nowadays?

SqueakyPop · 09/07/2008 18:11

Super, Riven. Let's all aspire to poverty and stop complaining.

MsDemeanor · 09/07/2008 18:11

Are you a bloke, SP?

tatt · 09/07/2008 18:12

He has half a point in that you can make choices that affect your life. However some people have fewer choices than others. Rich conservatives with a good education have far more choices than the poor. And there *is" a genetic component to obesity (links below). And actually the Food Standards Agency have shown that the diet of rich and poor doesn't differ that much. But, hey - let's not let facts get in the way of our prejudices. David Cameron shoud read the article in the times www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/columnists/daniel_finkelstein/article4296359.ece

about family courts and cognitive dissonance - bending the facts to suit your opinions
