they just havn't got a clue.
It just gets more tragic by the week.
when will the goverment act an make the punishment fit the crime.
saw Bens sister on tv calling for national service. but not sure that would help. and why should well behaved youngsters have to be treated thesame as the bad ones.
Just ranting a bit as it is all getting scarey.

My husband and I grew up in a country where NS was compulsory. It was a total waste of time for all concerned ...

Will it be for everyone?? Will it only be for young males?? How could they legislate to keep men out of the workforce/out of work for a period - surely it would be an infringement on their rights in this day and age...

Why thank you 2shoes, it's nice to be appreciated

It seems logical to me that it is definitely the gang mentality that is causing the rise in stabbings?

The 2 seems as districtly related as ,say the rise in binge drinking in youngsters and the advent of alcopops.

So, what fuels gangs? There seems to be an opinion that gangs are replacing family and other relationships. Children join up because they haven't any other structure to give support and guidance. Then they get caught up in this fucking stupid honour, respect, get rich or die trying bollocks. Put bluntly, gangs and the drugs that pay them are the only career option for a swathe of children. Collectively we have failed them and we need to fix that. Although I have to say that I think they have also been victims of shit parenting as well as poor education, housing etc.

Good posting wasabipeanut!!

I wish I could link to the article, but a while back there was such a good article talking about the way we have marginalised and infantilized boys.

The article went on to say that with our small houses and our extended families and the way that govt-funded housing has been designed, the kids find the acceptance and made the streets and the communal grounds their virtual living rooms..

With such a breakdown of family relationships it is no surprise to me that gun and knife crime is the way it is..

wasabipeanut · 03/07/2008 13:37

But then as soon as you start to mention the breakdown of families being a factor you enter a whole loads of other problems. By "supporting" families you, by definition, discriminate against single parents.

Whilst many troubled children seem to come from broken families, I personally wouldn't like to argiue that single parents contribute to knife crime.

The whole thing is a bloody nightmare and there are no easy answers. I'm all miserable now.

Sorry.

theSuburbanDryad · 03/07/2008 13:40

Why do we discriminate against single parents by supporting families wasabie?

Single parent families are still families!

wasabipeanut · 03/07/2008 13:43

Sorry Dryad and I take your point re my wording.

The point I was trying to make is that many people would argue that it is the breakdown of the "traditional" 2 parent family that fuels many ills including this one.
