The lack of prison places

Why are we not doing something about the lack of prison places?
I’ve just read an article where a 21yo punched a train ticket inspector in the face and knocked his teeth out. No jail time. And the two teen rapists who attacked a girl got no jail time a couple of weeks back.

Why do we not build more prisons. For example we could build prisons next door to recycling plants so that the inmates could sort recycling and be trained up in that industry. They could work in exchange for the food and board in prison and learn skills, discipline and have a job. As it stands, we are just releasing extremely violent offenders straight back onto the streets. There is no deterrent to committing crimes. If you shoplift, that also appears to be fine.

I don’t see how we can go on like this.

I agree we need more prisons but do you want one next to your home? Many wouldn't. Making prisoners work would take proper paid jobs from people.

Why don’t we build more hospitals, more schools, employ a million more GPs? All for the same reason. Who’s going to pay for it.

El Salvador has the right idea.
