How horrific 😢 I've heard of cruelty by nuns but this is off the scale.

Dig for remains of 800 infants at former 'mother and baby home' in Ireland begins

The remains of almost 800 babies and children are believed to be buried under a former 'mother and baby home' in Tuam, with many believed to have been dumped into a sewage tank that was dubbed "the pit".

Makes it no less shocking

This is true!

What consequences for those priests that have died? None!

Maybe exhume them and place in unconsecrated land? The ultimate shame for them.

I’ll be happy to piss and shit on their bodies. We need to stop thinking priests and nuns are superior, no one not even the fucking pope is special. Jesus said not to worship fake idols but yet here we are continuing to doing this. You would also think that the amount of money the priests/bishop/pope spend on their little dresses the money could be better spend else where. I don’t read about all these drag queens raping children but I do read a lot of articles about the other men in dresses raping and abusing children.

It goes well beyond that, catholic priests are incredibly well taken care of. They will claim poverty but every priest I’ve ever come across drives a very snazzy care, they have a decent top up income from parishioners, one I know has a hot tub.
I lost a lot of respect when our priest for my granda’s funeral accepted double payment from the family and didn’t even suggest “oh no X already paid me” they just happily line their pockets further off grieving families.

I’m glad you said this. These pregnant women were thrown out by their families, these mother & baby homes were a product of society at the time, not just the Catholic Church at fault here

Your seriously defending the nuns on this? Of course it was their fault! The girls didn't assault themselves I hope this Leeds to them getting shut down there all horrible then act all high and mighty about it because God told them too

Lindajonesjustcantlivemylife · 17/06/2025 06:05

I said it on another thread "religion in all it's guises it's always women and girls that have to conform IE suffer"
And generally the same rules don't apply to the high ups.

I have two cousins who were adopted from a mother and baby home in Yorkshire.

A couple of years ago one traced her parents. Her mother was Irish, got herself to England, gave birth and went home. She didn't tell anyone. Not even her husband when she married and had more children.

I'm now wondering if she came to England just to cover up the pregnancy or if she knew what could happen if she had stayed in Ireland.

Putting a child up for adoption and never seeing him/her again vs the baby not surviving?

Pope Benedict whatever number was in the Hilter youth and was drafted in the German army. I wonder how many people he murdered?

Try a cursory bit of research about Pope Benedict's military "career" and also what was likely to happen to kids who refused to join the Hitler Youth (and their families)

Plenty to blame the RC for, probably much to blame PB for. This is not it.

My aunt was a Nun - she has since died. She used to say that these mothers had no where else to go...they were told to leave their homes by their families. If the Nuns hadn't taken them in where would they go? It was a cruel time and the church had such a stranglehold on society.

The reason they had no where to go is because the church told their families that they had sinned and were evil!

If the church had told them to cherish and nurture their daughters, they would’ve of.

The church was wrong and so were the families in their grip.

Please don’t try to say the Catholic Church were in anyway “saving” these girls, no they caused it.

I tried to get information from the Sisters of Mercy and various institutions in Ireland, but they send you small amounts of information and I think try to deter you from pursuing it.

I went to schools run by the Sister's of Mercy, has there ever been a group more badly named?

Has anyone seen the film Philomena. It is a true story (with the usual artistic licence added) and normally I think books are better than films but I don't think I could cope with reading it. Again it is well worth a watch.

The nun's cruelty carried on long after the adoption or death of the babies.

Knowing a mother is looking for her adopted child and also knowing the now adult adopted child is looking for his mother and to deliberately keep them apart is pure evil.

NutellaEllaElla · 18/06/2025 15:49

I read that the nuns have apologised...Is this not a crime? Is there a criminal investigation?

NutellaEllaElla · 18/06/2025 21:03

I watched the youtube doc on Tuam, it said that there is no 'appetite' in the Irish government to investigate. WT FUCK. What century are we in!

But how old is the documentary? Who do you think authorised the Commission into the Investigation of Mother and Baby Homes and the preliminary 2017 dig? Do you think some locals are just going in with shovels, 11 years after Catherine Corless brought it to public awareness?

In fact CC, the Tuam historian who first investigated the burials for a local history journal, had local people complaining about what she was doing, and saying that she was giving the town a bad name. I think that’s worth remembering, along with the fact that the mother and baby homes and Magdalen laundries were public knowledge, and in fact could not have existed . That’s what the international news keeps getting wrong. It wasn’t some shameful secret.

Fairislesweater · 01/07/2025 20:29

As someone brought up in the Catholic Church, I can say that some of the most unchristian people I’ve met have been catholics. I am lucky enough to have not encountered cruelty, but the hypocrisy is rife. Church every Sunday, but no time for anything that actually helps - making time for others, helping families who are struggling, putting themselves out slightly to give someone in need a lift somewhere… astonishing.
