How horrific 😢 I've heard of cruelty by nuns but this is off the scale.

Dig for remains of 800 infants at former 'mother and baby home' in Ireland begins

The remains of almost 800 babies and children are believed to be buried under a former 'mother and baby home' in Tuam, with many believed to have been dumped into a sewage tank that was dubbed "the pit".

I've seen documentaries about this location before, quite a while ago actually.

DuesToTheDirt · 16/06/2025 17:12

I was just looking to see if anyone had posted about this. Woman raped, baby dies 6 months later, and then "a nun came up behind her and said 'the child of your sin is dead'."

"My mother worked heavily pregnant, cleaning floors and a nun passing kicked my mother in the stomach."

It is hard to believe that anyone could be so cruel, but especially so-called Christians, and especially women - maybe jealousy as they had to live celibate, child-free lives?

And the fathers of these babies? No consequences, of course.

‘Especially women’

women have always been as nasty and wicked as a man imo. Not the ‘softer sex’ at all

i feel like I knew about this from a while ago

soupyspoon · 16/06/2025 17:21

I think this was in the news a while back, perhaps a couple of years ago, unless its somewhere else

Fusedspur · 16/06/2025 17:25

I don’t get why it’s taken them so long to dig.

Sofiewoo · 16/06/2025 17:25

It was discovered that some babies were found in the septic tank and some unmarked graves I believe, and through research they have identified how many children and babies died at the facility. However they haven’t actually excavated the site yet, which is the current news. It’s been known for over a decade and it’s crazy it has taken this long for it to finally be looked into properly.

It’s unfortunately not that surprising or shocking anymore, and another stain on Irelands history.
Thankfully the church’s stranglehold is so much looser these days.

wizzywig · 16/06/2025 17:28

The whole situation is too much for my heart and brain to comprehend. I hope that all those who are buried are given a decent burial and their families questions are answered. Such cruelty from those women of faith, it doesn't compute

Fusedspur · 16/06/2025 17:25

I don’t get why it’s taken them so long to dig.

They commissioned a 5 year inquiry beforehand, then needed to change the law to dig the site and set up an incredibly specialised team. The pandemic in the middle will have caused a significant delay no doubt.

Sofiewoo · 16/06/2025 17:31

While the scale of this is huge the treatment of women in these religious sites by both priests and nuns was by no means uncommon. It was widely accepted how much cruelty took place in these homes.
If anyone is actually interested the Magdalene Sisters is a good watch for background.

Witchypooforyou · 16/06/2025 17:31

Why is anyone surprised at this? We know the Catholic Church cover up pedophile priests. Spotlight is a great film for anyone still in doubt.

Mother Teresa being a classic example.

her religious belief was suffering brings you closer to God- so all those poor souls she “cared” for were left dying in horrific pain with no palliation.

JuneShellChangeHerTune · 16/06/2025 17:40

There’s a documentary on YouTube here about the Tuam laundry.

Here’s a BBC article which gives a list of “facilities” included in a report, with links to related articles.
The Stormont-issued report examined the period between 1922 and 1990 and runs to nearly 550 pages.
The last mother-and-baby institution closed in 1990; the last Magdalene laundry in 1984.

Here are links to a couple of other documentaries.

This came out 10 years ago - it’s just that the excavation is finally starting now

RJ2025 · 16/06/2025 18:08

How awful, I hope the lady who has been at the front of this investigation finds out the truth about her sister who died

Mingenious · 16/06/2025 18:08

It’s incomprehensible that this was still going on in my lifetime.

Westfacing · 16/06/2025 18:16

Have any of the nuns in these cases every been prosecuted over the years - or even questioned?

Various male clerics have faced justice around the world, but I've never read of any Irish nuns facing the music for the terrible treatment they meted out to these young girls and their babies.

Yup. Mother Teresa was not saint. I’m still surprised that people still think she was a woman of god. Predator that targeted the poor and most vulnerable is a better choice of word.

Great film. I fucking hate priests and nuns. Our headteacher was a nun back in the 90s, no idea what qualifications she had that made her suitable for the job but she was a horrible cunt. Nasty, evil, bully, even the teachers and parents were scared of her. We were all glad when retired and is hopeful dead now. Yes I just called a nun a horrible cunt. Not every priest and nun are good holy people.

I reckon they are probably all dead if the last cases were from the 60s. But I highly doubt it. They’ll be all hopefully burning in hell now.

It’s incomprehensible that this was still going on in my lifetime.

I lived near one of them as a kid in the late 80s. I didn't really understand what it had been, just that it wasn't spoken about for some reason. My mother ran a community group for kids in their hall and we used to see the little old ladies wandering around. There was a definite feeling that there was something wrong with them somehow.

Humans really need to work on ourselves.

Treaclewell · 16/06/2025 19:10

To be fair, but not very, those nuns included women who were sent there without real choice. Rather like women sent for life into mental hospitals because they looked at boys in their teens. Not surprising they went bad as they did not have the benefits of a religious calling.

Yogabearmous · 16/06/2025 19:16

Awful. So heartbreaking that this was allowed and actively covered up. Religion is never an excuse for evil.

It doesn't surprise me at all.

Young girls sent away thinking they'll get to keep their baby0
Baby murdered.
