I was interested because I am one of the numbers who got my British Citizenship last year.

first saw the article on virgin

read some of the comments after the article. i feel ill.

Those comments are foul.

I fear a growth in the support for groups like the BNP.

nickytwotimes · 20/05/2008 14:39

Dreadful comments.

I think people forget how many Brits move to other countries and how many of us are descended from immigrants. I had an argument (at church!?) on Sunday with a woman who was moaning about immigrants despite being married to an italian and having Irish parents.

Also, I think we need new citizens to prevent the in-breeding that causes some of those comments on the virgin site, lol!

SirDigbyChickenCaesar · 20/05/2008 14:43

i have to admit that i posted on hte site (obviously taking the OPPOSITE view.) but i was told that I am what;s wrong with this country.

And you a Knight of the Realm too, Sir. Bloody cheek!

Seriously, tis depressing when you find out how some people think.

SirDigbyChickenCaesar · 20/05/2008 14:55

thankfully the majority of people don't think that way (i hope!)

You are very welcome here SirDigby

theBOD · 20/05/2008 15:00

well sir digby as you are nothing more than a horrible drunk and adventuring hobo i see no reason for you to be here.

expatinscotland · 20/05/2008 15:02

A record number of Brits left the UK to emigrate abroad, too.

SirDigbyChickenCaesar · 20/05/2008 15:06

lol @ theBOD

that's true expat. but apparently that's ok (according to the comments on that site)

i've never, in my day to day life, had any 'go home' type comments. but then english is my first language and i'm white. i really feel for people who are given a hard time.

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 20/05/2008 15:12

Exactly, SirD!

PussinJimmyChoos · 20/05/2008 15:18

Am lol at the comments after the article from one John in England....he cannot spell for toffee...go to night classes you racist twat!!

SummatAndNowt · 20/05/2008 15:53

I saw that, I wondered if it was because a lot of people decided to get their applications in before the fees jumped up hugely last year. I know that's why my husband finally got around to getting his.

My favourites are those people who are emigrating to get away from all the immigrants. It really makes me pmsl, especially when they get somewhere, usually Australia, and find they are on the receiving end for a change.

SirDigbyChickenCaesar · 20/05/2008 15:56

that's what i think too summat.

check this though: "The difference between us and you Newbrit is that we will adopt our new countries way of living, we will be called an immigrant,we have met high standards and paid high fee's this keeps out the sh1t,unlike the many others that come to this country they take ,they impose thier substandard ways and beliefs, they are what we call invaders." PMSL!!!

it wasn't a walk in the park to get into this country, far from it. what a bunch or arseholes. i really need to stop reading that page.

OP posts:
SummatAndNowt · 20/05/2008 16:19

"substandard ways and beliefs"

That's just sickening.

People really need to look at themselves. Especially people who think it's just so easy to live in a foreign country, especially if you don't know the language, away from family and friends and everything you have ever known, and that's without racist bastards giving you a hard time.

Stay away from the forum, so much bile. I like to think most people are nice inside. I fear, from too much time online, people are really obnoxious and judgmental inside, but I will continue to believe they aren't.

OrmIrian · 20/05/2008 16:27

I am always just a little bit surprised and delighted when anyone wants to actually take UK citizenship. It has become a default position to say how awful the UK is - frequently by the same people that dislike immigrants - that the fact that people want to come here pleases me hugely.

You are most welcome sirdigsby

barnstaple · 20/05/2008 16:30

I think I have substandard ways - well MIL certainly thinks I do - not sure what substandard beliefs are: ones I don't hold very strongly?

What a load of b&&&&&&ks. Makes me ashamed to be born a Brit.

SummatAndNowt · 20/05/2008 16:33

Living here has had a bad effect on DH, he went from being a Republican to being a socialist

SirDigbyChickenCaesar · 20/05/2008 16:39

i have stopped looking. wonder if they would still think i was the problem if they knew i was canadian? wankers. i'm still fuming

OP posts:
SirDigbyChickenCaesar · 20/05/2008 16:41

and AND they keep going on about 'England'. i'm in scotland FFS. people are much more open minded here (unless you are a catholic of course! )

OP posts:
SummatAndNowt · 20/05/2008 16:56

or English

Kevlarhead · 20/05/2008 21:54

Canada was mostly populated with Scottish emigrants though. End result is that most folk have got one or other distant cousin in Ontario/Alberta or somewhere. Start a conversation, and (if you lived in Toronto) you'll usually find that the other person has a cousin called Dave in Vancouver. They may also ask if you know him...

If you're in Scotland that's worse than being an immgrant to England. All Scots are thieving dole-swilling scum, and their sole purpose in life is to relieve the poor-downtrodden bankers and traders of Ing-er-lan' of their hard earned cash. They spend it all on public sector jobs, tennants and heroin.

BTW, I think you can avoid the anti-catholicism if you avoid Glasgow/West Coast/any of the central belt town where the locals have a single massive eyebrow and vestigial tails...

InLoveWithSweeneyTodd · 21/05/2008 12:03

there is a confusion between immigration and citizenship surely? I mean, I am not British, but work here and am married to an Englishman but have not intention whatsoever to apply for UK citizenship.
So what are those people protesting about: immigration or the fact that some non-UK born people ask for the citizenship? or both?

God this gives me the shits. When I lived in the UK I would periodically get people telling me conspiratorially about "the immigrants". When I pointed out that I was born and raised 10,000 miles away in Sydney and came to England on a plane, they'd inevitably go oh yes but you're different, which very obviously meant white.

I am now an immigrant in China and the treatment I've had here puts the commentators on that article to shame. People here are acutely aware of the economic and social contribution we immigrants are making to society and bend over backwards to be lovely.
