Because of a piece of cutlery? The mind boggles and it made me feel really sad. People in care homes become confused all the time due to multiple reasons. Seems highly unlikely anyone was in danger enough to warrant this force. He subsequently died 3 weeks later

Well we don't know the history of this gentleman. I've known three elderly men who with dementia became very violent which caused enormous distress to their families. They all had to be heavily sedated continually.

I had an aunt with constant UTI problems who suffered dreadful confusion but no signs of aggressive behaviour.

We don't know what the staff told the officers either.

I still think everyone should have waited him out.

I wish I could unsee that video 😢

Same. And I generally have no emotions but that has really upset me.

I will move heaven and earth to make sure that my elderly mum never ever has to reside in a care home.

BotterMon · 19/05/2025 22:37

Just watching this on the news. Vile, thick as shit officers who should be suitably punished. There are many wonderful police officers - such a pity we often only hear about the shit ones.

How exactly was he going to stab elderly people or knock them flying when there were none near him and he was immobile?

Edited

He was in a communal area to start with which presumably was the dining area or sitting room. If you read the article you'll get a better idea of what happened prior to him being moved to his room when the police appeared.

powershowerforanhour · 19/05/2025 22:38

Reminds of the video of the cops in America shooting the woman from across the kichen "because they were afraid she was going to fling boiling water at them" even though she was merely complying with their instruction to take the pot off the stove , her voice and body language were completely non threatening , and she would've had to have been a champion shot putter to get the saucepan anywhere near them at the distance.

HectorPlasm · 19/05/2025 22:47

The police are a joke - no-one respects them any more and they know it. Riven with incompetence, laziness, complacency and political zeal. They are not fit for purpose on any level and need reforming from top to bottom.

Care home staff were unsuccessful in getting the knife off him, he refused to drop it when asked repeatedly by the police, should they have waited around for potentially ages for him to drop it or try to get it off him risking injury to officers, himself and/or carers? He'd already "poked" a staff member with it.

Force was necessary to ensure everyone's safety.

Oh come on! If two police officers couldn't disarm a one legged 93 year old pensioner then they're in the wrong job.

Bollocks, they could have left him on his own away from other people. It was a bedroom, they could have waited for him to fall asleep/locked the door so no one went in.

Unnecessary, barbaric treatment of an elderly man.

Southwark Crown Court was told on Monday that one minute and 23 seconds elapsed between the officers arriving and Mr Burgess, who was 92 at the time, being shot with the Taser.

I agree and refer back to my post @fisherlong

I'm guessing they couldn't do that in case he harmed himself.

He was immobile. So simply sitting at the other end of the room and waiting for him to calm and get bored, would be the way to go.

I'm my professional life I dealt with younger people who injured, or risked injuring, me and my team. Our strategies for dealing with them were based on giving them time to regulate themselves and calm, where possible. They were very mobile, but in the majority of cases, the adult involved staying calm and still was key.

Even if something more dangerous had happened before this video started, at this point the man was in a chair and apparently unable to get up. So there was no risk to anyone, staff or police, further than an arm's distance away.

TheKeeperOfTissues · 19/05/2025 23:05

Can you imagine if these impatient, trigger happy fucktards were issued with guns?
There really needs to be a much better and more robust screening programme for police.
The ones who let the police down are the ones public remember.

I have very little faith (personal experience & news headlines)

Jenna2212 · 19/05/2025 23:11

It's disgusting to read that both of these officers are still in active duty.

They are on restricted duties. The alternative is we pay them for doing nothing.

This is one reason i don't trust the police.

Time was they were competent and trained to be sensible and de-escalate.

These days? they just want to go for low-hanging fruit. I hope he has lost his job.

He?

You don’t speak for everyone.

Many people do not have any confidence in the Police anymore because too often incidents like these and more are being reported which proves that they aren’t fit for purpose at all. These “officers” are meant to have been trained. They are the epitome of lazy, incompetent thugs. Just because you do, doesn’t mean that plenty don’t.

You aren’t telling me anything new here. I just don’t like the sweeping generalizations.

ArtemisiaTheArtist · 19/05/2025 23:28

Police officers should be taught that infection in older people can lead to confusion. That aside, I've seen the video and those officers were bloody incompetent. I hope they go down.

What about the risk of him harming himself if you just left him

Well he’s dead now.

So that all went well, did it?

I really doubt anyone there was in danger from a 93 year old amputee

Quite. Police could have just taken it out of his hand.

nocoolnamesleft · 19/05/2025 23:33

That makes unpleasant viewing. The police seemed to escalate things very rapidly, when one would have thought their role was to do the opposite.

WearyAuldWumman · 19/05/2025 23:35

Bloody hell. They just needed to wait for him to fall asleep.

When DH was in stroke rehab, one of the other patients was mobile but had lost all mental acuity. He used to follow female nurses and visitors around, like a duckling following its mother.

At breakfast one day, he picked up a table knife and stared at it. One of the patients shouted 'He's got a knife!' The nurses just calmed down the other patients, watched the man and waited for him to put it down.

A few days prior to his stroke, the poor man had featured in the local paper...as the Lord Provost unveiled one the sculptures produced by him.
