New phone scam: Fake bailiffs

Report of a new phone scam - fake bailiffs phoning people to say they're on their way to collect a debt resulting from a court case. A phone number of a local court is given for the person to phone to check the legitimacy of what the bailiff is saying. The court phone line is also fake.

The two examples in the article are both people who run a small business and the supposed debt was for unpaid advertising, so it sounded plausible. Perhaps the scammers are targeting specific people they research first. But be wary anyway.

If anyone is stupid enough to fall for shit like this they slightly deserve it

zzplea · 17/02/2025 10:37

It's not about being stupid. The story of a court case and bailiffs puts people in a stressful situation, which is what it's designed to do. And if you've ever known of someone who had a court case settled in their absence because they didn't even know it was happening (which I do) then you know it's not an impossible situation to occur.

Thanks for this @zzplea . It is easy to fall for scams and bailiffs aren’t exactly renowned for their professionalism so I can see why this would throw people off guard.

I had a court case settled in my absence and I'd be terrified about it happening again. I can see why people fall for it when they're under pressure like that
