Is the video of the man being swallowed by the whale real?

Having watched it, I can't help but think it's been made with AI. And if it did actually happen, then how lucky it was that someone was filming him at the right time. That's the problem with AI, I don't know what's real and what's not anymore. But it just seems too far fetched to be true!

It looks real, but he wasn’t actually swallowed, he went into its mouth then pretty much straight out again.

Whales of this type (was it a humpback?) have huge mouths but teeny throats, so it couldn’t have swallowed him.

There was a similar video a few years ago, maybe this same one, I don’t know.

Yup, just seen it - he was momentarily taken under but popped back up. He wasn't 'swallowed'.

TheCryingTheBitchAndTheFloordrobe · 14/02/2025 21:55

It was the way the father kept telling the son to calm down that had me absolutely howling.

I mean, he just got engulfed by a bloody whale! If there's ever a time that you're totally entitled to freak the fuck out, surely that's it?!

TwentyTwentyFive · 14/02/2025 21:26

Me too. I'm not saying it doesn't happen but it seems bloody convenient it was caught on camera.

As I read it the father just happened to be filming the song when it happened, sheer coincidence is all

It cannot be gory, whales do not have teeth and do not eat other mamals.

Killer whales (orcas) certainly do.

pearbottomjeans · 14/02/2025 22:02

They’re not saying he was swallowed are they? He went into the whale’s massive mouth and then was spat out. No idea if real or not but don’t think anyone thinks he was swallowed??

LillyPJ · 14/02/2025 22:04

From the description on Radio 4 news today, it sounded like he wasn't actually swallowed. The whale got him in its mouth then spat him out. The man just thought he might have been swallowed. Either way, it's an amazing story and sounded genuine, but I've not seen the video (taken by his dad).

NeverDropYourMooncup · 14/02/2025 22:04

I very much doubt the whale approached him or wanted to communicate something to him - he was just paddling over a shitload of krill, there was no way the poor thing wanted a mouthful of plastic and bloke when its throat is only just over a foot in diameter.

ETA: the BBC need to stop writing such histrionic headlines. He wasn't swallowed, it's physically impossible.

confusedlots · 14/02/2025 22:04

Yes I know he wasn't actually swallowed, I was just being lazy in writing the post. With so much AI stuff out there these days it's hard to know what's real and what's not. Guess it's certainly plausible, but something just makes me feel pretty sceptical about it.

The poncho makes me think he's genuine.

They did use the word 'swallowed' in the Radio 4 news headline, but it sounded more like he'd just been in the mouth then spat out. He just imagined he might have been swallowed. I guess, when you're inside a whale's mouth, you're not as clear-headed as you might have been!

This was a humpback, which is a baleen whale. Baleen whales indeed don't have teeth and don't eat other mammals.

Some toothed whales do prey on mammals, such as seals, dolphins anc even other whales.

Huckyfell · 14/02/2025 22:09

Whales clearly don't like "swallowing" men either. Contrary to their beliefs.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 14/02/2025 22:09

Yes and it's not the first time it's happened

I haven’t seen the video (gore/death/injury is not the kind of content I would seek out).

However I don’t understand why you wouldn’t think it could be real. There’s subreddits for example that exist to post content of people dying or being injured etc. That kind of darker content, whether accidental or not, definitely exists on the internet.

There’s no gore death or injury, fear not. It’s pretty amazing actually.

Tell me you have no idea what OP is talking about without telling me you have no idea what OP is talking about.

Your attempt to come across as high and mighty has failed spectacularly. The video is in mainstream news and there is no blood or gore involved.

TheFormidableMrsC · 14/02/2025 22:21

It was on Sky news so presume it's real.

Some whales have teeth sperm whales for example. Killer whales are notoriously gory. I know orcas are dolphins but all dolphins are whales.

I’m trying to think of a word that conveys something accidentally ending up in your mouth and really struggling.
It feels like a failure of the English language.

😂

It's been shown everywhere (BBC news, BBC breakfast, ITV national news etc), its not remotely graphic.

I don't seek out death and gore, which is why I had no idea there were reddits of death.

@theboffinsarecoming orcas/ killer whales are actually a dolphin, not a whale.

extra info on this
Orcas, despite being dolphins, are commonly called 'killer whales' due to a mistranslation of the Spanish 'asesino de ballenas' (literally 'whale killer'), reflecting their historical predation on whales.[6] Since the 1960s, the use of "orca" instead of "killer whale" has steadily grown in common use.[7]
