What do you learned people make of this?

A German pilot apologises for bombing Bath. My first thoughts are that I think it is honourable on his part and maybe he needs to clear his own consience but also totally unnecessary.
Am I missing something? I jsut think if you in forces and have to go to war, you have to do what you are enlisted to do. I think I am not seeing something blindingly obvious and you are all going to go 'derrrrr' at me!
