I honestly don't know what to say...

This is a very sad story. I'm sure it's very rare, but this sort of thing is a risk with forceps I think.

Interesting for me to read about your ds pucca, I was delivered by forceps but c-section too. I sustained nerve deafness (ie complete deafness) in one ear as a result.

expatinscotland · 22/04/2008 11:10

DD1 was born with HF forceps and had only scratches.

I am thankful everyday for that consultant and I can't praise her highly enough.

Sad

Terribly sad story.

DS1 was delivered by forceps, and it was a rather scary scene.
But it saved his life.

Thankfully the scenario in the news article is very rare.
Horrific and awful, but rare.

pucca · 22/04/2008 11:19

Snorkle....How terrible

I was quite shocked they used forceps as i was having a section, i naively thought forceps were used for normal deliveries only.

I noticed it pretty much straight away and it was raised bumps behinde his ear, it flattened out over time and now is a scar roughly around half an inch directly behind his ear. He was also quite bruised the day after delivery, you could actually see the shapes of the forceps on his cheeks.

madamez · 22/04/2008 11:20

Horrible, borderline racist reporting, though. Yes it's a very tragic story, but far more babies and mothers are saved by forceps delivery than harmed.
Also, isn;'t this an indication of overall bad practice, employing a doctor without checking his/her competence, short staffing etc? Yet it's reported as Evil Bosnian Babykiller.

doggiesayswoof · 22/04/2008 11:20

Thanks - nice thread title.

expatinscotland · 22/04/2008 11:20

DD1 came out first try. Well, I had to push, too.

Consultant came in to assess after I'd been pushing for about an hour and a half - baby's heartrate was normal.

She told me the plan - to try the forceps and if there was no progress with them then Csection, so I was moved to theatre and prepped - epidural was in place but anaesthetist topped it up.

MW had whispered that she was glad this consultant was on as she was very senior.

She asked if 3 junior doctors she chose could observe and I was okay with that.

DD1 delivered quickly and she did an excellent job with the stitches.

Plus the juniors all came round to visit after the delivery and kept asking about my health and the baby's and were very thankful.

I just hope they learned well from her!

SoupKitchen · 22/04/2008 11:22

This has made me sick to the stomach, Reminds only too vividly of DD's delivery.
She lives with facial scarring everyday and is aware of it even though she is only 3
Awful awful things

fortyplus · 22/04/2008 11:24

Is it worth mentioning that this is done deliberately to kill a foetus in cases of late abortion?

expatinscotland · 22/04/2008 11:24

Just reading this thread makes me even more thankful!

DD1's marks were gone in about 10 days.

Consultant made it very clear that she wouldn't be trying forceps at all if she weren't reasonable sure baby could be delivered in such a way and for me to prepare for csection if need me.

SoupKitchen · 22/04/2008 11:25

No fortyplus I do not think it is worth mentioning.

MargaretMountford · 22/04/2008 11:26

fortyplus

madamez · 22/04/2008 11:26

Fortyplus, please don't post arrant bullshit. IDE is an emergency medical procedure carried out, usually in cases of hyrdocephaly and anencephaly, where the foetus will not live and the intention is to minimise the stress on the mother's body. The myth of 'Partial Birth Abortion carried out on Evil Selfish Bitches' is one of the most disgusting and misogynistic LIES around.

ImightbeLulumama · 22/04/2008 11:26

i thought that had been totally outlawed , fourtyplus, i think out of respect to the very much wanted child who died as a result of this botched delivery, any discussion of abortion should perhaps be done on another thread?

expatinscotland · 22/04/2008 11:27

C'mon, this is about FORCEPS DELIVERY! Not abortion.

and again:
'i think out of respect to the very much wanted child who died as a result of this botched delivery, any discussion of abortion should perhaps be done on another thread?"

SSSandy2 · 22/04/2008 11:31

well if it is true about the abortions, I don't think it is so awful to mention it here. Breaking any baby's skill with forceps is horrific, doesn't matter how old they are and I'd never heard of that before.

SoupKitchen · 22/04/2008 11:32

Just put photo of DD's injury on my profile
I don't think many women realise how brutal forceps are, I know they save lives but Me and DD will never be the same again
