It’s a frightening thought given the talks that are happening with Biden and Starmer. Can anyone talk me down?

Absolutely agree with you but prepare for pile on from echo chamber brigade. They got their own personal thread and will not allow any deviation/ debate.

Thank you! I’m always a bit worried that my broadband will be sabotaged if I don’t pick a team! Mumsnet will sweep in and smash up my router! 😆

I’m not pro or anti anything but life. I want us to all stick around a while longer!

Beth216 · 14/09/2024 13:06

I agree too, Putin doesn't want European domination, he just wants what he wants - but he won't stop till he gets it. Pretending Ukraine could 'win' is unrealistic IMO, the war is just being dragged on and on to what end? How can you win anything when your country has been razed? Putin will keep going forever.

There should have been some agreement much earlier on to give Putin what he wanted. No one here seemed to bat an eyelid when he took Crimea, why did it all completely blow up over Donbas? Why wasn't there an agreement that Putin could have the areas he saw as Russian and the rest of Ukraine could pursue joining NATO - with a period of time for people to move between the new borders.

I just think war isn't good for anyone and solutions have to be found.

I’m from the “echo chamber brigade” you talk about and I would like to point out your comment is nonsense. I think that Serenity raises some very interesting points that are worth examining. For future reference, well constructed and evidenced posts are always welcome on the “personal thread”.

@WinterMorn The truth hurts, doesn't it. Look at the facts , you've got the same posters, no one dares to enter there.

HauntedBungalow · 14/09/2024 14:13

@Beth216 it didn't even go crazy over Donbas initially - Putin was there for years. Russian global financial power was increasing though - together with China and the other BRICS members, they were on the verge of setting up their own banking/credit system, just at the point where the UK decided that what was previously a skirmish now amounted to an invasion and announced that Russia was now at war with Ukraine.

Newterm · 14/09/2024 14:23

The war with Ukraine and Russia is going exactly nowhere. All it’s achieving is costing lives and a massive amount of money. If Trump gets in I expect he will enter talks with Putin and a solution will be found.

Rummly · 14/09/2024 14:56

There is some terrible old shite being talked on here. Putin threatened by NATO? The Donbas belonging to Russia? We should allow this weirdo psychopath bits of sovereign countries. Get to fuck.

AdoraBell · 14/09/2024 14:59

I don’t think it will happen, doesn’t stop me being stressed though 🤦‍♀️

I remember, as a wee girl growing up near the nuclear sub base, that we practised getting under our desks incase the bomb went off.
I remember the map of a 4ton megaton bomb would take out most of Clydeside including Glasgow, Loch Lomond etc.
I was terrified.
Even as a 6 year old I thought it was silly as one wall of the classroom was completely glass.

I’m not going to argue the toss with you based on whatever experience you personally may or may not have had. Your dislike of the Ukraine thread is your issue, not mine 🙂

Autumn1990 · 14/09/2024 15:56

I think the war will continue, possibly for quite a few years to come. The west will have to keep giving the Ukrainians weapons until putin is no longer in power. The only issue with this is he can’t quit.

AndSoFinally · 14/09/2024 16:24

Putin is selfish, and he is old.

I worry this will be some kind of "final act" on his part, once he knows he's definitely dying, he'll take us all with him

He won’t quit. But others will ‘quit’ him.

If the war on Ukraine gets any more disastrous for Russia the FSB will kill Putin as soon as a successor acceptable to it can be found.

The Kremlin is now a latter-day Hitler’s bunker.

Autumn1990 · 14/09/2024 17:06

Hopefully others will quit him fairly soon

I don’t believe it would be ‘allowed’, for want of a better term, to get to that stage.

HateSpewingTurnip · 14/09/2024 17:22

Even if he was crazy enough to go through with MAD, he'd get taken out by someone in his gang before he hits the button.

I don't think it would be MN sweeping in to smash anything! I would be careful, there are some very polarised views out there.

I hope you’re right ! All I’ve seen of his ‘team’ is that they like the idea of nuclear tidal waves etc 😂

Absolutely no point in worrying about stuff over which you have no control. TBH it felt more likely in the 80s.

This.

But let’s be honest, some it of it is so overblown that you get the feeling that it’s an act or an expectation. I think that quite a few members of this crowd are playing a part.

I know it’s a serious matter but it all comes across as slightly Dr Evil like especially when they mentioned the nuclear tidal wave !

Teajenny7 · 14/09/2024 20:13

I remember an old holocaust survivor visiting my High School.
He quoted something that I often think of in moments of stress
" If you worry you die. If you don't worry you die. What the hells the point of worrying?"
Especially, when you have no control over circumstances.
