Nuclear war

It’s a frightening thought given the talks that are happening with Biden and Starmer. Can anyone talk me down?

OP posts:
AGirlInACountrySong · 13/09/2024 19:34

No, sorry I can't

It's a possibility, I agree.

sprigatito · 13/09/2024 19:36

It's sabre rattling. It's no more likely to happen now than it was six months ago. I'm not belittling your anxiety, the whole existence of nuclear weapons turns my stomach - but Putin doesn't want to die a horrible death any more than you do. Probably less, given that he's a malignant narcissist.

SunnieShine · 13/09/2024 19:36

Bloody raging if it happens. I've spent years paying into my pension and would appreciate the chance to spend at least some of it before I croak.

Fair. I’ll be a bit put out too, if a giant flash, fireball, mushroom cloud and radioactive fallout do for me.

But that’s what insurance policies are for. And a pension is just an insurance policy with knobs on.

TokyoSushi · 13/09/2024 19:42

It won't happen. It seems like they're not going to announce that Ukraine can use the long range weapons tonight now anyway.

Even if they do, nothing will happen to us, maybe some more cyber attacks and huffing and puffing, but nothing else. Things will likely get worse before they get better for the poor Ukrainians though.

LoveSandbanks · 13/09/2024 19:56

Not gonna happen

Kedece2410 · 13/09/2024 20:03

There's been threads like this regularly since the Russian/Ukraine war started - and before. And there'll probably be threads about it in 10 years time

unsync · 13/09/2024 20:07

Absolutely no point in worrying about stuff over which you have no control. TBH it felt more likely in the 80s.

NewGreenDuck · 13/09/2024 20:21

I'm old. I remember being told that the atomic clock was so many minutes to midnight, being shown film of what we should do to try to save ourselves. Hiding in the cupboard under the stairs was really going to help, wasn't it?
I've learnt that there will be nothing we can do on a practical basis if we get to midnight.
Do I think Putin will be a complete pratt? I don't think he will do anything that would definitely kill him. He might be lots of things but he wants to survive.

BiscuitlyBoyle · 13/09/2024 20:23

I grew up afraid of the bomb dropping in the 80s. We honestly thought it was going to happen any minute.

Spoiler alert: it didn’t.

Growsomeballswoman · 13/09/2024 20:24

It will last minutes. We won't know much about it.

GingerPirate · 13/09/2024 20:44

Hm.
On the other hand, I wouldn't have to visit relatives
some 1000 miles away with nothing in it for myself, just giving my bloody time.
😁🤡

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 13/09/2024 21:08

This was my entire childhood and now it’s my kids’. Do we need to resurrect Sting for another ‘Russians’ version 2.0?

I don’t think anyone will do anything until after US elections/ that’s according to some of the better political analysts. It’s more than sabre rattling at this point but cool heads prevail. Ironically, it’s Putin who may be the cool head.

WinterMorn · 13/09/2024 21:12

Not this AGAIN

Nourishinghandcream · 13/09/2024 21:25

It's been a possibility since 1949 and hasn't happened yet so try not to worry too much.😁

My Ddad worked in a government department and was involved in having bunkers built in the 50's.
OH worked in industry but was involved in refurbishing said same bunkers in the early 80's (replacing the standby generators and air filtration plant to bring them up to modern standards).
Ddad said his lasting memory was the masses of cheap, flat-pack coffins that were stockpiled. OH remembers how he saw huge amounts of canned food being removed (dated 1950's) and replaced with new stocks.

We have lived with this for decades, I am sure we will get through it again.😉

wastingtimeonhere · 13/09/2024 21:29

Growing up in 70s and 80s we we got used to constant threat and films showing what would happen. Still here.

PollyDactyl · 13/09/2024 21:29

You'll have to learn to live with the fear.

We did in the 70s. We're OK and you will be, too.

maybeiknew · 13/09/2024 21:32

When I was 15 I had a huge phobia of nuclear war , I’d read ‘children of the dust’ !

As part of my coursework I wrote a story about a war between Russia and U.K. started off when British missiles hit a Russian government building. I incorporated all sorts of strange things (euthanasia clinics for those who wanted to avoid dying in the blast😂 and included lots of detail about food stockpiling and melting eyeballs in the very end 😂) But now I keep seeing the news and remembering how scared I was then !!!

gamerchick · 13/09/2024 21:37

There's no point worrying about a nuclear war. There's no planning for one.

Anyway, some simulation that was about for a bit was hitting the sea next to Ireland and covering a chunk of the UK in radioactive water. Something to disable us for a bit.

That probably won't happen either. Cyber attacks are more likely. Stock up for prolonged power cuts or something. Cash is king sort of stuff.

mynameiscalypso · 13/09/2024 21:40

So much of international politics is just willy waving

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 13/09/2024 21:41

You do not have to worry. Poo-tin has been drawing red lines since he invaded Ukraine and he is full of shit. Even if it is given the go-ahead, the chances of it going nuclear are still very, very low.

Bellyfullofbiscuits · 13/09/2024 21:45

🙄

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 13/09/2024 21:54

You know what OP, listen to some good military and political analysts who know the history (and all the historical and current beefs) intimately. They’ve played a part in it so they have solid insight and they’re not at all scary to listen to. Those guys are the cool heads.

You’ll actually feel better listening to them. They know the lay of the land and it’s so interesting listening to the strategies (and lack of!) that our leaders utilise and count on working in their favour. It really is one big willy waltz, to add to the willy waving sentiment upthread.

If you want any recommendations, I’ll PM you.

UmbrellaEllaEllaElla · 13/09/2024 21:56

The threat of war is always there.

Viviennemary · 13/09/2024 21:57

It's being played down and brushed away as Putin's just sabre rattling.
