Why would there be an arrest over Matthew Perry's death?

I didn't follow all the updates and news very closely but thought it was a medication overdose and hot water (literal, like a jacuzzi). Just seen someone's been arrested though?

what wicked people

CalicoPusscat · 16/08/2024 06:12

Something about this is reminding me of that new york doctor, married with children, who died of an overdose - there was a clip of her going down the corridor wearing bunny ears, then I think the people who gave her the drug tried to leave her in the street? Kristin perhaps?

Does anyone remember that?

It isn't nice to think of Matthew Perry being exploited when he was vulnerable.

Lentilweaver · 16/08/2024 06:13

His trusted PA and friend injected him. I find that especially awful.

Update from Reuters. I am surprised. How awful.

Prison sentences coming their way, good!

Dustyblue · 16/08/2024 06:37

That's incredibly sad, and infuriating. How could these vultures be so heartless? You can't tell me they didn't know what they were doing. Urrrghhh.

billysboy · 16/08/2024 06:42

Some of the stuff that goes on in the US is nuts

Julianne65 · 16/08/2024 06:43

I often think about Heath Ledger and his overdose. That was also prescription drugs be became addiction to. Some American doctors seem to have no morals. They just think of the money.

xyz111 · 16/08/2024 06:51

Just read a news article rather than just the headline 🙄

EachandEveryone · 16/08/2024 07:16

Didn’t he speak highly of his assistant?☹️

CalicoPusscat · 16/08/2024 08:08

Dr Kiersten Cerveny - not sure why Matthew Perry reminded me of her except that the people she thought were friends weren't and left her to die as she was ODing

Carebearsonmybed · 16/08/2024 08:14

So many Hollywood people die from overdoses. All their suppliers should be jailed.

The line between prescription drugs and illicit drugs isn't so clear cut in America as rogue doctors can be paid to write out prescriptions for things that would never be authorised on the NHS.

Look at the OxyContin scandal. Thousands dead.

Most of the heroin addicts I've met started on OTC/prescription meds.

IMO opiates should only be available in hospital.

AnnaMagnani · 16/08/2024 08:14

A brief google of one of the doctors involved and found he was a 'lifestyle doctor' basically selling weightloss meds, ketamine and viagra.

So some distance there from doing actual healthcare as I understand it and basically just selling stuff to rich people for as much as they can.

Private healthcare in the UK usually looks a lot like the NHS only with nicer rooms and quicker. But there is a small subsection in London dealing with the very rich which is basically like the Wild West. Am guessing it's even worse in Hollywood.

Mrsjayy · 16/08/2024 09:21

I imagine it's a lot worse in Hollywood @AnnaMagnani they have Dr's on tap to prescribe anything they want. The fact that Matthew Perry was receiving Ketamine "therapy " says a lot about the ethics of these private "Drs". It's scandalous.

PandoraSox · 16/08/2024 09:30

I read this in the Guardian. Utter bastards (both are doctors).

The court documents revealed text messages sent between Plasencia and Chavez in which the former discussed buying ketamine to sell to “victim MP” – Perry.

In the exchange, Plasencia wrote: “I wonder how much this moron will pay”, and “let’s find out”, the Times reported.

HelenWheels · 16/08/2024 09:32

it also reminded me of the oxytocin scandal

so wicked, greedy

they will get off though, unless the assistant is the scapegoat

Oh wow. I didn't read that, just saw an arrest and wondered why. How would they find out the dealers, I thought they were all disposable phones etc

Just out of interest, why didn't you read the article or watch the news report? The arrest was the headline, the detail is in the story.

Hadn’t seen this before. Something wasn’t investigated properly there. She was with men when she died. Her underwear was found in her handbag. They had dragged her to the front door then (I think) left her. There were bruises to her neck which could be explained away by a medical procedure she’d had (or maybe it was in fact related). One man seems to have had 10 months (only 10 months) in prison for his part in it.

She was neither looked after that night nor by the subsequent reporting or investigation.

When I originally posted it was 'breaking news arrest made in MP death more to come' - so I posted as I was wondering what it could mean. Not quite the 'gotcha' you think.

It also reminded me of Michael Jackson where a doctor was so blinded by money that he signed up to give him an anaesthetic every night for insomnia.

It really is a system where if you pay enough you can find someone to do what you want, even if that is dangerous to you.

Number 1 rule of Medicine is First Do No Harm.

Edited

Ketamine therapy is a real thing and it's very effective for some. It's pretty fascinating if you ever get bored and want to read the research, it's very effective at 'treating' the symptoms of depression especially, but the effects don't last long and obviously taking it regularly comes with it's own problems. The NHS here doesn't have it licensed for this use, but you can actually pay to have a course of it through the NHS.

In this case:

Witness interviews in the autopsy report said he had been undergoing ketamine infusion therapy for depression and anxiety. But his last known treatment was a week and a half before his death, so the ketamine found in his system by medical examiners would have been introduced since that infusion, the autopsy said

Seems like this way beyond any sort of therapy schedule he was on.

AnnaMagnani · 16/08/2024 10:07

Yep there is a big difference between seeing a private psychiatrist, having an informed discussion about all treatment options, one of which is ketamine according to evidence based protocols.

And seeing a 'lifestyle doctor' who uses ketamine first line and will sell you as much as you want.

I worked for a while in an area we had some super rich patients. They can be very vulnerable to this kind of crap- used to everyone saying yes to them and all problems being solvable with money.

Definitely. Also I seem to remember one of the Olsen twins was called by whoever found Heath Ledger? It’s all so murky.

Mrsjayy · 16/08/2024 11:52

@Skippingropes it just seems to me anyway, that MP a known and lifelong addict was chasing his ketamine fix and maybe thought oh well it's a legitimate treatment so it's fine.

Mrsjayy · 16/08/2024 11:56

And as @AnnaMagnani said this Dr was a lifestyle Dr not a Physcatrist . It's just legitimate drug taking isn't it? Its immoral and unethical and corrupt.
