Why is Biden so reluctant to step down?

I Still can’t understand why he won’t step down. He should never have run again, he wasn’t popular. Why did he? Surely he must know he’s going to make Trump win?

Well it’s happened! I’m not as comforted by it as I should be. I still think the democrats look like they don’t know what they’re doing. I wish they had a fresh face. I don’t think Kamala will stand much of a chance sadly. And yep, because she’s a mixed race woman. Obviously I hope I’m proven wrong! I just don’t think she’ll be able to stop the Trump train. Perhaps if she’s been up straight away.

Biden has endorsed Kamala. The Clintons are backing her.

Last time I lookeed Kamala wasn’t a slam dunk to run for President. Dems might have someone else in mind.

@DysonSphere I agree there should be a retirement age for monarchs. Several European monarchs have stepped down in favour of their heirs; Queen Margrethe of Denmark this year.

The Queen may have sworn to serve her entire life but could have had a role where she could do that as a very elderly lady while handing over the crown to Charles, the longest serving heir in waiting in British history. There was something quite upsetting about seeing her decline with no choice but to keep working, because of that promise.

We get good at doing things by doing them, and starting so late to my mind was unfair to him and something of a waste.

And when he had to finally begin while having the world's cameras shoved in his face as he mourned his mother's death, just as his sons had to, shows that the whole system is cruel. Allowing him to settle in that role earlier would have helped him shoulder that time.

If we'd had that policy, Charles could have been considering his retirement now, with decades of service given and the prospect of a young Royal family stepping up and providing a 21st century monarchy that might be more palatable, more relevant to younger people.

I could not agree with you more. Had the Queen given over the reins earlier, yes we could now have a younger, fresher, more relevant Royal Family.

Unfortunately William and Kate are likely to be in their later years by the time they ascend the throne, and sadly I see calls by republicans to abolish the monarchy only growing louder until then. The whole Meghan debacle is a shame too, which whilst I am by no means a fan, thinking retrospectively now, perhaps it would have been better to just give them more of what they demanded wanted, for an easier life and a more modern inclusive image. It's such a shame to see this decline.

I agree... I think the Monarchy and its relevance is declining. During Covid when we barely saw them, the world didn't stop. This year with their unfortunate health problems and few public engagements, it's been barely noticed they aren't around. Apart from Charles, he has been very stoic and performing some duties.

This with knobs on

Charles doesn’t appear to have learned the lesson . He is too old to be King now, and so is Camilla.

I don't think being a mixed race woman will kill her candidacy. Those who wouldn't vote for such a candidate were already voting for Trump. And her colour may help with black voters, who have been drifting away from Biden. A lot may depend on who she picks as VP, but Trump's VP choice now looks like a huge mistake. And we have a former District Attorney running against a convicted felon. It will take a couple of weeks before the polls are meaningful, but early indications are positive for Harris.

Importantly, this has changed the mood amongst Democrats. They were starting to despair, worried that Trump would take the House and the Senate as well as the White House. There is now much more enthusiasm from Democrats.

It clearly isn't over yet, but it currently looks like she has a much better chance of beating Trump than Biden did.

Totally agree @prh47bridge
I think this nomination has invigorated the Democrats.

And Trump is now stuck with JD Vance and hearing him say this morning that Kamala Harris, someone on Twitter posted... sorry Trump you can't abort Vance, you have to carry him to term! I think Trump has made a huge mistake with this man and this is his latest....

JD Vance says women who haven’t given birth like Kamala Harris are “childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives,” and have “no direct stake” in America.

I agree @prh47bridge , and yes @BustingBaoBun (looking on from
my part of the world) this has reinvigorated the Demi rats.

Three men have emerged as possible selections for VP - all from swing states. Two, have served in the armed forces (one was an astronaut) and one, I think is a career politician. All have solid political backgrounds.

Also Trump has issued a complaint about Kamala using Borden’s campaign funds. I don’t understand why, as it had already been said that it was legal. Just an effort, on Trump’s part, to try and create possible dirt I guess.

And a Republican, introducing Vance yesterday at a rally, predicted Civil war if Trump lost, has since apologised.

“I’m afraid if we lose this one, it’s going to take a civil war to save the country, and it will be saved,” Lang told a Republican audience at Vance’s former high school in Middletown, Ohio, as he prepared to introduce the vice-presidential nominee. “It’s the greatest experiment in the history of mankind, and if we come down to a civil war, I’m glad we got people like … Bikers for Trump” and the group’s national president, Mark “Smitty” Smith, “on our side”.”

He also used Trumps words “fight fight fight.” Extraordinary rhetoric for politicians to use:

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/article/2024/jul/23/ohio-republican-trump-civil-war

The response from the Harris camp to the civil war remark:

Donald Trump and JD Vance are running a campaign openly sowing hatred and promising revenge against their political opponents,” a Harris campaign spokesperson said. “That’s why a Republican official was empowered to predict a civil war while introducing these candidates.”

Who might Kamala Harris pick for VP? Three favorites emerge

Governors Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania and Roy Cooper of North Carolina, and Arizona senator Mark Kelly, are reportedly on the shortlist

Really shocking to watch what's being so openly said by the Trump campaign.

DeftLemonDog · 24/07/2024 06:43

A bit of a laugh for those who haven’t seen it, Trump IS Legally Blonde Trump
