Nottingham Gun Crime...Here we go again

Why oh why is Nottingham painted/tarred so badly with gun crime? [[http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/nottinghamshire/7326460.stm see here]

the annoying thing is that I have never ever in the twenty years I have lived here seen or heard or been subjected to gun crime. Nottingham is a lovely vibrant city, so why is every little thing reported?

henni - I ask myself the same question....... I've never felt intimidated, scared or at fear for my own or my childrens' safety although do live outside the city.

I can't see that it's any worse than any other big city to be honest.

I live in Birmingham, have never felt threatened or experienced gun crime.

Wisteria, I also live outside the city too. I don't think it is any worse than any other city either.

I know someone who lived there (near city centre) who says violence is rife and it is a very scary place to live. Do any of you that live there/nearby go into the centre at night?

I live 2 miles from the city centre and have lived in some fairly suspect areas when I was a student. I've never encountered gun crime, although i do think it's concentrated in specific areas.
I read an article in a sunday supplement a year or so ago which said there are basically 3 main gangs in St Anns, Radford and the Meadows and the gun crime in the vast majoroty is all related to the gang culture.
That said, the city centre on a weekend night is not the most pleasant place due to alcohol, but I'm sure it compares to any other city of a similar size etc.

Have done many times and can honestly say that I have never seen anything untoward - there are fights on a Fri-Sat night outside pubs but they don't appear any worse than the ones I used to see in smaller towns when I was younger.

Gun/ knife crime is rife in nearly every major city AFAIK so I understand the OP's annoyance that Nottingham seems to be targeted. I don't think we suffer as much as Manchester does from what I understand from friends who live there. It all depends on your own experiences.

Yes, that is what annoyed me, surely Nottinghams gun crime is no worse than any other major city, it is just that because we have had 3 (that I can think of) big profile cases in recent years then the city seems to be targetted by the tabloids.

I have relatives who used to live in The Meadows and they never saw or had any problems with gun crime.

I also go into Nottingham City centre at night, (perhaps not as often as I used to as I'm getting a little long in the tooth now) and I never see anything other than the drunken brawls outsie pubs which aren't any different to the ones I saw in my yoof.
