Wow, that makes me so happy! I hope those people get the help they need, it's so sad. That gives so much hope!

It's going up and down????? [puzzled]

It said on the lunchtime news that Oxfam received its biggest ever single day's total donations yesterday - £200,000.

The coverage has been very immediate and very affecting. You can't not give.

Twiglett · 29/12/2004 19:37

since I posted this its up to $2,181,428.43 which is a jump of $1.1 million ..

why haven't amazon.co.uk done the same?

OP posts:

and its just jumped $3,000 in the time it took me to post that

I am still that the world can work well

Maybe amazon here don't need to do it because there is so much general encouragement to give and awareness of the need. Red Cross here got over £1,000,000 yesterday I heard.

it says on the amazon site than you can retract your payment for the next 30 days! which saddow would do that ?

We just got back from an evening out and decided to donate equivalent total cost of evening -- theatre tickets + babysitter+ taxis + dinner. Seems like a good benchmark for anyone thinking of making a donation but not sure how much to give.

Just in case you are tempted to donate on amazon, you shoudl be aware that you won't be able to do so under gift aid. Gift aid effectively allows the tax on your payment to be claimed by the charity - so for every £10 you donate the charity gets an extra £10 £33 or £40 depending on your tax status.

If you apy tax in the UK your money will go further if you donate to a UK based charity.

Jampots .. maybe in case people get carried away and donate money they can't afford??

It's going to be hard isn't it - I bet there will be collections everywhere - in the entrance to Tesco, in the street etc and I'm going to feel terrible walking by but I've already made a hefty donation on the British Red Cross site. I can't keep putting money in every box though I'd love to.
