Isn't it quite well known that reptiles can carry salmonella? You would have thought the parents would have known this really.

I did know this, but only because next door used to have a snake (before i moved in thank god), and their HV told them about it when they had their Ds2.

Why anyone wants a snake as a pet is beyond me anyway.

my brother's children had a snake and I'm heavly pregnant. My 3 year old goes over there and plays and I wish I could bring it up but daren't in case I offend them. the snake has just died but they want to get a new one.

my brother's children wanted a pet and because he is allergic to dogs/cats/rabbits they went for a hair free creature. But it sits in a glass tank for most of its days and gets fed a frozen mouse now and then. And makes a lot of salmonella-contaminating poo [although they don't know that, they say it is very clean] Wish people were told these things when they buy them.

my kids love reptiles. dd1 held one at age 4, and i made sure she scrubbed her hands with hot soapy water afterwards. its well known that they carry salmonella and good hand hygiene is essential.

ruty · 01/04/2008 11:05

can you please tell my brother misdee?

misdee · 01/04/2008 20:22

will do!

needs to clean their hands after handling with hot soapy water. tell them a lady whose husband is immune suppressed told you

we have a snake called ruby. and whenever my kids handle her, we make them wash their hands, its commonsense FFS

I had a snake AND a prem baby on oxygen (and a lazy partner ), I NEVER cleaned or fed or handled the snake with out thick leather gloves (as it goes the gloves were owl handling gloves, like gauntlets) I always wore a sleeveless t-shirt and I used sterile forceps to retrieve the mice from its plastic bag in the freezer and defrosted it in a holey topped specially designated Tupperware box, which were both sterilised after each use. I ALWAYS scrubbed with anti bacterial soap afterwards to my pits. My baby was more important!! The vivarium also had one of those locks on that is like the ones in a pet shop, so my kids and others couldn't get to her. And, anyone who touched Lizzie had to scrub WELL afterwards ... I would watch them (I am a control freak).

relationship with my brother and sister in law not very easy - if they get another snake I'll have to sum up the courage!
