Are you going to vote for Boris Johnson? If so, WHY???????

scampadoodle · 26/03/2008 20:06

Because I know voting for Ken yet again is tantamount to inviting a benign dictatorship (wish Labour would field a different, viable candidate) but Boris Johnson ??? He is a buffoon with no relevant experience. At least Paddick has run a police force. (& no, editing the Spectator does NOT count).

But I am really really worried that he'll get in. Bye bye Oyster & cheap bus fares...

Why don't the tories parties put up proper candidates?

Boris is just not credible. I think it's much more likely that he is an imbecile with the odd flash of genius than the other way round, which is how his spinners like to position him
Sorry to hear dp doesn't rate Paddick carm. He might get my vote anyway - I've always voted for Ken in the past but am really fed up with the cronyism and dodgy dealings at City Hall lately

Lauriefairycake · 26/03/2008 21:02

"There's nothing wrong with getting somewhere in life because of money, privalage and an old school tie anyway. "

Please tell me you are being sarcastic

actually you are because you wouldn't have spelt priviledge if you were being serious

marina · 26/03/2008 21:04

Laurie, it's privilege
I think the best use for Boris' tie is to gag him with, frankly

Lauriefairycake · 26/03/2008 21:05

I know, can't bloody type

OverMyDeadBody · 26/03/2008 21:06

Pity there isn't a tongue in cheek emoticon (or silver spoon in mouth one)

It's just one way of getting somewhere in life, no different than any other way though right? Maybe not fair on all the people who don't have it so easy, but that doesn't make it wrong does it?

foxinsocks · 26/03/2008 21:08

Ken pisses me off. With his anti West and South West London status. I can't help but see him as the newt and do think he's made a lot of fuck ups in the last year or so. He's like his friends he goes to visit abroad - a dictator with a hard on for power. Having said that, there have been a few positive things that he's done but not enough imo.

There's not much competition though is there.

sfxmum · 26/03/2008 21:10

''all the comments objecting to him on the grounds of his class and background are so UTTERLY TEDIOUS AND PREDICTABLE. So what if he's posh? Better image for London than the newt fancier with the common voice (is that not the same sort of prejudice? ) and the mates nicking council tax payer's money. There, I've said it''

and I have many objections to Ken and mates but still must go through the pain, no way BJ

Monkeybird · 26/03/2008 21:11

Do we get a vote oop North? Ooh, goody...

Feck off, ya big London-centric arses.

BigGitHamsterKillingDad · 26/03/2008 21:19

I am thinking of voting for Boris purely as I think Ken needs a kick up the arse. I am fed up of the increasing cost of my council tax bill and the increasing arrogance of Ken's administration.

Carmenere · 26/03/2008 21:25

I will vote for Sian

MegBusset · 26/03/2008 21:27

"It's just one way of getting somewhere in life, no different than any other way though right?"

No, it is different because without wealth and a privileged background you need talent and brains and hard work. With all of those, you can have success handed to you on a plate even if you don't deserve it.

The sad thing is that if it wasn't BJ I might even have considered voting against Ken, I'm fed up with him too.

pooka · 26/03/2008 21:27

Watch it biggitdad! I have P on my side too. And I know where you live

Vote Ken!

OverMyDeadBody · 26/03/2008 21:29

Well Meg, the way I see it, if you have all of that, then you do deserve success! Why wouldn't you?

BigGitHamsterKillingDad · 26/03/2008 21:30

I'm gonna vote with your husband pooka!!
I bet you've hid his voting card alreadyI actually don't think there will be much difference between the two candidates if Boris gets in anyway.

MegBusset · 26/03/2008 21:30

OMDB, I meant if you have the wealth and background but not the brains or talent.

BigGitHamsterKillingDad · 26/03/2008 21:32

What if it was Jeffrey Archer standing?

OverMyDeadBody · 26/03/2008 21:33

Well then yes, wealth and background alone doesn't equal success, although it does give you an advantage over people of similar intelligence who don't have wealth and background on their side. But that's just life isn't it? Nothing's always fair for everyone.

willow · 26/03/2008 21:34

We've just had a bit of paper through hte door that suggest Boris got a scholarship to St Pauls and Eton. Implication is that he is bit more normal than his education would suggest - reckon they're trying to downplay the poshness?

BigGitHamsterKillingDad · 26/03/2008 21:40

Of course he is posh, he's a Tory for god sake! What do people expect?

pooka · 26/03/2008 21:48

Oh well Jeffrey Archer! Is hard to think of a more suitable candidate.

DH knows what's good for him (or at least to lie spectacularly about how he voted). No, he agrees with me (of course) - Boris would I think be a disaster for London.

Was talking to my mother and she said that after disasterous Callaghan, even she (labour party member) vaguely wondered if it was possible for things to be worse under Thatcher. She says that within about a month, Mrs T had done enough to make mum realise that actually, yes, things could be a lot lot lot worse.

CatIsSleepy · 26/03/2008 21:50

no no no
bozza would be a rubbish mayor

florencefosterjenkins · 27/03/2008 12:59

benign dictatorship? Ken is about as far from benign as I am from Old Etonian. I don't give a stuff where Boris went to school. He's the most appropriate candidate to vote for if I want Ken out. So that's why my dear.

I'm sick of Ken's cronies siphoning off taxpayers' money to no good purpose, I hate Ken cosying up to hardline Islamists, I hate his arrogance and open abuse of anyone who questions him. I hate his desire to see the capital plastered in skyscrapers against all opposition from local residents. I hate the fact that he postured on a podium crying about a slave trade that was abolished 200 years ago when he appears to care considerably less about the plight of hundreds of women trafficked into prostitution in the capital TODAY. I hate his political dogmatism. I hate the fact that the annual cost to my household of the GLA has gone up ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY FIVE PERCENT since 2001 & stands at around £300. And the fact that the costs of the Olympics to my household will inevitably increase. I hate the fact that Ken's 'free' newspaper costs £3 million a year. Does anyone actually read it and think it's useful? I hate the fact that he seems to think he's totally, utterly unaccountable.

There, is that enough for you??

Believe me, I was glad to see Ken get in the first time. I admired his legal fight against Gordon Brown's disastrous PPP scheme. I thought the congestion charge was initally a good thing. But I've come to know him a bit better in the intervening years and as Neil Kinnock said, 'Everyone likes Ken, except the people who know him'.

donnie · 27/03/2008 13:08

sadly I do feel Ken has been a little corrupted by his power and there is indeed a lot of cronyism in operation within his circle. However I will still vote for him because he supports initiatives I believe in and he has the balls to stand up to the labour Government (and frequently did to Blair) which proves he is no puppet. Plus the thought of an arrogant out of touch toffee nosed arse like Boris running the transport network makes me quiver in horror. I just can't think of one nice thing about him. So my vote is for the best of a not great bunch.

Wish trevor Phillips was standing!

SixSpotBurnet · 27/03/2008 13:10

There is no way I will be voting for BoJo.

motherinferior · 27/03/2008 13:12

Did you ever see him in his I Heart Maggie badge at university, SSB? Detestable even then.
