westbridgfordwire.com/mum-of-two-collapsed-and-died-after-haemorrhage-waiting-at-qmc-ae/

39 year women waiting at A and E, she had been waiting for around 7 hours, became unconscious, they assumed she had left until finding her later, unconscious in her seat. She had a brain haemorrhage and died a couple of days later.

It's just so sad and scary.

That's desperately sad, but I fear it will become more common.

Strinking to prevent this sort of thing happening increasingly frequently due to terrible staffing and workloads.

Awful story, poor woman and family

This is your take. Mine is these bastards in government continue to starve the NHS of resources. It is a very sad story, it shows what a mess the NHS is in.

Surely you mean, these bastards want to go on strike to fight for better working conditions so more Jr doctors stay in the NHS, so hospitals are properly staffed so that something like this never happens again?

If my workplace was so dangerously understaffed and underfunded that an unconscious woman could go undiscovered for five hours I would probably strike too. This is horrific but it is not the fault of junior doctors.

To be fair, if she only presented with a headache and was triaged as such sadly I can see why her wait time just kept escaping.

Think long term. Things will only get worse if things don't change.
The current conditions are part of what they're striking for.
And as a HCP of over thirty years in the NHS, they are as bad as I've ever know both as staff and as a patient.

Literally one of the aims of the strikes is to improve recruitment and retention of junior doctors so the departments are better staffed so patients are seen quicker which would have potentially stopped this situation from happening

So glad to see most people in this thread defending the strikes which seems insane to have to do in the first place tbh

This hits too close to home for me. I had a subarachnoid haemorrhage. Was told it was a hemiplegic migraine and to return the next day in ambulatory care due to A&E being rammed. They performed a lumbar puncture and found blood in my spinal fluid then performed a CT scan. 24 hours later I was having platinum coils fitting into a ruptured aneurysm.
Crazy times we live in. I was lucky my aneurysm was small. If it had been a couple of CM bigger in size I would've instantly died. I was lucky brain surgery and recovery was successful. I'm still not 100% but I'm alive.

However, we all know that during the strikes people are more at risk. That's the whole point of the strikes to make the government concede by making it so hospitals can't cope without the doctors. My concern is the people who are most vulnerable who will suffer during the strikes. I feel like that's somewhat forgotten when strikes are debated

Hospitals kill people all the time, the general public doesn't care, that's why it's not major news.

This baby died of dehydration in hospital because the nurses and doctors neglected her. No consequences. No real interest from the public.

That's your take. Mine is Junior Drs deserve better pay and this Government, by not dealing with that issue effectively has prompted this action. Their treatment of our NHS is disgraceful. I'm not a great fan of all aspects of its working practices but it is an institution to be treasured and protected not undermined and destroyed.

Report
passiveconstellation · 09/02/2024 18:59

The principle of universal healthcare that's free at point of use deserves to be treasured and protected.

I disagree that an institution with a consistent track record of killing and harming patients then covering it up or blaming the patients themselves deserves either of those things.

Oh for fucks sake. You really are clueless aren't you. Years of cuts, underfunding and mismanagement have caused the problems with the NHS. Blame the government not the workers.

I can't stand this anymore. I am an NHS nurse and everyday things are getting worse, the things I see, the lack of basic supplies/equipment and of course absolute minimal staffing.

Things are going to continue to go horribly wrong under this government. I feel so sick going on shift as I cannot do the amount of work needed which means things are missed. Often it's patient washes/observations but it can be delayed clinical care/medication and ensuring those who cannot, have help to eat and drink.

The volume of work to staff ratio is horrific.
I wake up remembering what I have not done/handed over and it doesn't matter how many breaks I miss or how late I finish my shift it cannot be done. It is making me unwell.

Believe me, those of us on the frontline are standing up and speaking out but no one is listening. We do care.

I don't want to give too much detail as it may be outing but a very close relative to me recently died after being unable to see a GP & being misdiagnosed by a nurse who dismissed their illness as something much less serious despite the information and risk factors being readily available on the NHS website.

Actually, there are more consultants around on strike days as they're all pulled in, as well as routine appointments cancelled.

So what do you suggest the Government do. Yes they could pay a decent wage and then what ? Will the millions on waiting lists suddenly been seen will stories like this poor woman or baby not happen again will ambulances get to us quicker now? What’s the answer?
