Woman, 57, thought she had cancer until doctors told her she was 30 weeks pregnant

She did have IVF though

It is wrong and selfish.

That child will have a mum of 70 when he/she is 13. 75 when she/he is 18.
It is not fair to risk that your child will have to deal with alzheimers and ill health before the age of 20.

There should be laws against it.

bethoo · 23/03/2008 15:37

we have the menopause for a reason, our body knows that we probably would not survive to see our children mature and the strains it puts on the older bodies both physically and mentally. sorry but you have like what 30 - 40 reproductive years? why wait til you cant?? quite selfish bringing a child into the world with the possiblitly of leaving it parentless as a young child and the torments in the school yard.

WalnutEGGshell · 23/03/2008 15:42

"the torments in the school yard" - that's no reason not to have a baby. If it were, you would restrict a great number of people, not just those you may (or may not) consider too old.

Nbg · 23/03/2008 15:45

Not really sure what to think about it all but this made me laugh

"I have worked with children for 11 years so motherhood wont' be such a shock for me"

The womans deluded!

juuule · 23/03/2008 15:47

"Should be a law against it"
Who gets to decide who should have children and who shouldn't?

juuule · 23/03/2008 15:48

Nbq - that thought crossed my mind, too. But at least she's had some experience with children which is more than I had before I had my first.

QuintessentiallyAnEmptyCave · 23/03/2008 15:50

Juule, the body. As another poster said, the menopause is there for a reason.

There should be laws against IVF treatment when your own body deam you too old to carry children.

juuule · 23/03/2008 15:51

And what about women with early menopause?

WalnutEGGshell · 23/03/2008 15:53

I understand that it is a difficult issue but it brings into question a wide range of circumstances where women might not be deemed suitable parents - what about a woman with profound learning disabilities or physical disabilities? Is it different for men over a certain age - and what is that age? Certainly not something I'd want to be responsible for legislating against.

juuule · 23/03/2008 15:54

Some might consider menopause isn't there for a reason but that it's a design fault if you like. Nature isn't that considerate and generally would like organisms to reproduce as much as possible. Although I will accept that there may have been some evolutionary benefit to menopause, although what that might be considering the majority of people in earlier times were probably dead before they reached menopause anyway.
I don't think it's that cut and dried.

WalnutEGGshell · 23/03/2008 15:55

Quint - what about younger women who cannot have children for other reasons? Their body has also deemed them unsuitable

QuintessentiallyAnEmptyCave · 23/03/2008 16:10

Why make it into me being against IVF, or women who for other reasons cant have babies? Cheap shots.

She is 57. Enough said.

I cant believe OLD Age should not be a reason good enough to stop us from having kids. It is.

lucyellensmum · 23/03/2008 16:11

Are people suggesting this woman should have a termination then?? I dont really know the story but from what i understand she didn't actually realise she was pregnant

lucyellensmum · 23/03/2008 16:12

ah, she was having ivf, thats a different thing then

NomDePlume · 23/03/2008 16:14

Holy Crap

DforDiva · 23/03/2008 16:22

wow, 57 is surely too old. but again she deserves to be mother.these things happen. hope both mother and baby will do well.

Cammelia · 23/03/2008 16:25

At least the child's father is 11 years younger.

Blandmum · 23/03/2008 16:25

There are guidelines in the UK that 'stop' the use of IVF in women over the age of 50, are there not?

Early menopause is a different issue, but isn't the 'normal' menopause there for good biological reasons?

expatinscotland · 23/03/2008 16:26

She's too damn old.

Sorry, but I think that's wrong.

I think there should be an age limit on IVF.

People nowadays refuse to want to acknowledge that sometimes ship sale, or that one day, they're going to die.

QuintessentiallyAnEmptyCave · 23/03/2008 16:26

If a woman has chosen to not have children in all her childbearing years, why does she deserve motherhood?

Of course I wish them, and especially the innocent little child, all the best.

But this is a good example of science abuse.

expatinscotland · 23/03/2008 16:26

Being a parent is NOT a right.

juuule · 23/03/2008 16:28

MB - what are the good biological reasons?

WalnutEGGshell · 23/03/2008 16:28

It wasn't a cheap shot, it was a request for you to look at the wider implications of your view.

I thought it was a debate.

Cammelia · 23/03/2008 16:28

Its a responsibility...........

expatinscotland · 23/03/2008 16:28

People go through menopause for a very good reason from a biological standpoint.

Because teh quality of their eggs has declined.

Their bodies are no longer fit enough to carry a pregnancy safely.
