Yes indeed.

Desiderata · 19/03/2008 16:53

Yes, I saw this on the news this morning. The government have been treating the Ghurkas like shit for years, denying their families an entitlement to settle here, etc.

Freckle · 19/03/2008 16:55

Perfectly dreadful treatment of people who have supported Britain loyally for years, only to get sh*t on a from a great height. Stuff 1997. If some can stay and be granted certain rights, they all should.

It makes me angry and sad that DH has worked alongside the Ghurkas, doing the same job,has got the same medals as some of them, and yet when Dh leaves he will get a (reasonable) pension.
I think it's shit actually

It is so shocking that these men are prepared to lay down their lives for Britain, yet are treated so unfairly

southeastastra · 19/03/2008 17:45

it's awful seeing them handing in their medals. fil fought with them in burma in ww2.

sort it out!

moondog · 19/03/2008 17:47

I agree.
Anyone who has fought for this country deserves to be treated like a King. In perpetuity. (Apart from harry et al)

whineywhingeybratsmom · 19/03/2008 17:48

my grandfather was in the british army. japaneses, pow for five years from the age of 15 to 20. (he lied about his age) never recieved a penny. his children live in poverty in the third world

Furball · 19/03/2008 17:56

I saw this on breakfast this morning and thought it was quite unbelievable. Especially when the country seems to let any old tom dick or harry in, it doesn't really make sense.

SheherazadetheGoat · 19/03/2008 17:59

this is utterly shit. heard their rep on the radio this morning. he was so fantastic refusing to be drawn on his personal story. i hadn't realised how shitty they had been treated. shame on the british government.

evie99 · 19/03/2008 20:56

It's a disgrace.

Something should be done about it now.

YouKnowNothingOfTheCrunch · 19/03/2008 21:00

My Grandfather was an officer with the gurkas. When we went to Nepal we were treated like family. My grandfather says that there has never been a more loyal, hard-working, tough, division in the British army. It is a crime that we would ask so much and give so little.

They have such pride.

constancereader · 19/03/2008 21:02

It is disgusting. It really should be sorted out now, it has gone on for long enough.

evie99 · 19/03/2008 21:42

Is there any kind of petition that we could do on MN? I don't know how that kind of thing works here but even just a list of signatures? They seem such wonderful people.

ange8 · 19/03/2008 23:20

There is a Downing Street e-petition here.

PortAndLemon · 19/03/2008 23:32

Why the heck is it "difficult to do things retrospectively"? Sounds pretty easy to me.

Callisto · 20/03/2008 08:30

Signed.

meglet · 20/03/2008 11:20

Signed. The Gurkas are fantastic and bloody tough. They are being treated appallingly.

fedupwasherwoman · 20/03/2008 11:49

I do think that, with sensible restictions in place, we could (as a token of our national gratitude) make an exception for these individuals and their immediate family if they want to settle here and if not we should be providing a suitable level of pension income bearing in mind the comparative cost of living in Nepal.

The tabloids and indeed more serious papers too, seem to carry at least one story a week of violent crime committed by someone who has been granted the right either temporarily or permanently to settle in this country yet these ex-soldiers with medals for service to the nation are excluded from settling here.

SORT IT OUT GORDON, SPEND OUR TAX MONIES ON SOMETHING WE DO AGREE WITH AND WHILST YOUR THINKING ABOUT IT ENSURE THAT IRAQ NATIONALS WHO ARE IN DANGER BECAUSE OF THE ASSISTANCE THEY HAVE GIVEN TO THE US/UK TROOPS ARE ALSO SUITABLY TAKEN CARE OF.

sophiewd · 20/03/2008 12:13

Signed

dweezle · 20/03/2008 12:37

have signed the petition - is there a way we can perhaps have this thread moved to Chat or Other Subjects so it receives as much attention as possible? Feel incredibly strongly about this and think the gurkhas are true and dignified gentlemen.

YouKnowNothingOfTheCrunch · 20/03/2008 14:07

Signed

dweezle · 20/03/2008 14:57

bump

saltire · 22/03/2008 09:54

Thought I'd bump this again
