Mumsnet in the Times

Here's a nice article about Mumsnet - make way for the newbies.

And blimey don't Justine and Carrie have a lot of children?

And I'd be extremely pissed off if I was the woman whose suicide attempt has been brought up yet again, it was a LONG time ago. There are plenty of more recent examples of mn philanthropy. (If you're reading I hope you're ok.)

Tamum · 16/03/2008 12:08

Yes, that's a very good point about the suicide being dragged up yet again, and about the tinies. I still don't think it was such a huge deal about the named posters simply because I assume it was having to be the usual style of journalism, having a box to the side, and I am also assuming it was CM's choice and not an officially sanctioned one. I think some of the descriptions were not recognisable too, ma'am.

kiskideesameanoldmother · 16/03/2008 12:46

i s'pose the box could have been something else like: 10 classic mn threads.
10 witty / insightful / hilarious posts

"David Cameron wishes he was a MNer." seeing he was on here the day before....

then again, i am dullmummy living in dullsville. what do i know.

hatwoman · 16/03/2008 16:09

have to say I don;t see how the sleb section was officially sanctioned or how mn made a mistake. CM wrote the article. she can write what she likes. criticise her not mn.

Or just NOT

I'm amazed anyone can see such positive publicity for the boards in a negative way

It's a fabulously warm and affectionate article

Blimey I think there was less upset when the standard ran a double-page entitled MUMSNET TERRORIST SLURS last year...

OP posts:
hatwoman · 16/03/2008 16:16

yes mp - that was a conditional if you want to criticise then criticise cm

hotcrossMonkeybun · 16/03/2008 16:17

I had not read any article about MN before this one, via MP's link yesterday and if I was a RLer (obv am only virtual now) would have found it interesting.

She's a journo FFS, they have to make it newsy somehow. I didn't know about the suicide attempt stuff, or any of the other and bobs actually so was good history for me.

Am not fussed by Sleb MNers. All life is like this: some people just show off stand out more.

foxinsocks · 16/03/2008 16:17

I think peeps are taking it a bit seriously. I'm still more interested in the decor in that picture (where has Justine run off to ).

It was buried in the middle of the Times magazine, it was a bit of publicity, a few posters were mentioned, who really cares - it doesn't seem to have created a huge rush of people joining the board going 'oooh where are cod lapin mp and aitch, I'm going to ADORE them'. It's pretty much same as same as.

WanderingTrolley · 16/03/2008 16:28

May I suggest the naysayers write their own article, and submit it to the publication of their choice?

princessmel · 16/03/2008 16:34

Agree with twig's first post. Can't see how that helps newbies feel equal.

foxinsocks · 16/03/2008 16:43

Why should we be helping newbies feel equal?

I think that's a bit silly tbh. On any internet forum there are posters who are more prolific and more popular than others. It's just the way it is! And I don't necessarily even think those 4 posters are even the most popular nor are any of them guilty of being in a 'clique'.

It was added, I imagine, to give a taste of the sort of people who post on here. And err that's it.

Don't read it out of context.

The more people complain about it, the more it sounds like a case of sour grapes I'm afraid.

foxinsocks · 16/03/2008 16:48

I mean, of course, the ethos is that 'everyone is equal' but there will ALWAYS be posters who are known better or 'regulars' either because they've been here so long or because they post so much. That's just natural surely.

WideWebWitch · 16/03/2008 17:17

I think mn suggested the posters in question, they weren't chosen by CM. So mn did single them out.

No sour grapes here, I can have an opinion without it being about me.

foxinsocks · 16/03/2008 17:18

I'm not sure that's right www (that mnhq suggested them). I don't know.

WideWebWitch · 16/03/2008 17:19

I am fairly sure it is the case. Justine will correct me if I'm wrong I'm sure.

Blandmum · 16/03/2008 17:22

I real life would you pay an equal amount ot attention to something that a total stranger tells you, or someone that you've known for a while?

I wouldn't.

The same is true on MN. I am more likely to pay more attention to people that I have come to 'know' on the board over a period of time, than someone who has just arrived.

And that isn't being nasty to the newbie. I just trust peoples opions more if I've read more of their opinions!

But given time newbies become oldies, do they not?

foxinsocks · 16/03/2008 17:26

yes, I agree. You always phrase things better than me martianbishop

princessmel · 16/03/2008 17:39

Yes you're right MB. I just thought that a newbie may feel that there's not much point posting if people are only going to listen to the 'elders' . It does come across that way sometimes. I.e lots of people make the same point but only the 'elder' is acknowledged. (sp- I had a late night last night)
But I do like all the posters mentioned. I just found it a bit strange to pick a certain few out and name them.

Anyway I'm not educated to a degree level so I'm probably just talking shite

I talk shite on here and no-onne listens.

However, I have been doing it for 3 years - so obv I have a thick skin.

I am still devestated by the fact I doin;t get even a sniff of a mnetion, given all the hours service I have given to this website. However, I'll get over it with the help of a bottle of Bombay Sapphire [hic][

squeaver · 16/03/2008 18:06

Re: who was featured - way back on page 13 of this thread, Justine gives an explanation of what happened (The Times asked for some names, MNHQ gave them a whole long list, CM decided who she was going to feature - in her style).

I'm a newbie; I didn't take offence at the piece. I thought it was great and really captured the spirit of MN in even the short time I've known it and it was nice to get a bit of history.

The fact of the matter is that you can't dictate what's written about you in the press and this was a really positive feature which most sites/organisations/companies would be absolutely delighted with.

Blandmum · 16/03/2008 18:15

Everyone was a newbie once, except possibly Cod, who leaped fully formed from the Font of MN

Newbie posts to get read and listened to.

It is just that if two people post about deletion mutations and disagree on a point, I may well favour Tamum, because I know that she is 'sound'
