Car crash at US/Canada border

When I first saw this news story I assumed it was a tragic road accident, but then I saw the video footage of the car taking off and flying through the air - what on earth has happened here? It's really very strange and shocking.

Link?

I read that the car exploded, suspected terror attack (maybe the bomb went off too soon).

junbean · 23/11/2023 23:28

They were going over 100mph and swerved suddenly to avoid a head on collision and hit something. The explosion and the proximity to the border made everyone think it was a terrorist attack. The only thing off about it is that they gave loads of details (it was a couple, in a Bentley, on their way to a casino after the Kiss concert they were going to cancelled) but also said they couldn't identify them in any way because the fire was all consuming. So which is it? Trudeau and Biden had emergency briefings on it. It's very strange.

Ok now they are saying it's a terrorist attack. Just google Rainbow Bridge, you'll find the reports.

If it is a terrorist attack, how did they manage to make the car fly in the air like that? If you saw it on a film you would think it was too unrealistic.

It isn't believed to be a terrorist attack.

It was momentum.
They were going very, very fast and hit something.

Seems odd though for a couple in their 50s on their way to a concert to decide to travel at that very very high speed? And then clear a fence and crash into the border crossing, seems an odd coincidence. I saw suggestions of a vehicle malfunction, how awful if it was some kind of software error on the car.

TheUsualChaos · 23/11/2023 23:40

I thought they were saying they don't believe it was terrorism related. Sounds likely to be a freak accident. Perhaps something happened to the driver? Medical episode?

The FBI have confirmed it wasn't a terrorist attack

SoIRejoined · 23/11/2023 23:46

No, I haven't seen any recent reports saying it was terrorism related. The latest report on the independent says they clipped the kerb before the car took off. So sounds like a tragic accident. Maybe a medical episode as @TheUsualChaos suggested.

I'm in the US and it's all over the news being reported as confirmed terrorist attack while earlier today it was reported as not.

What do you think 50s looks like? Slippers and cocoa?

Stil mystified as to why a PP thinks people in their 50s don't speed. Have there been any more updates?

SoIRejoined · 24/11/2023 14:32

@Bansheed this wasn't your usual speeding, I read they were doing 160 km/hr. Obviously it's possible for anyone to speed at any time of day, but usually it would be young males late at night with drink or drugs involved. This was 11 in the morning. Seemed to me more like a deliberate suicide attempt or terrifying mechanical failure, not just accidentally going a bit fast.

The independent is now suggesting possible mechanical failure. Rainbow Bridge explosion: Possible cause of Niagara Falls crash revealed https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/rainbow-bridge-car-explosion-niagara-falls-latest-news-b2452769.html

I don't think the poster was implying that people in their 50s shouldn't be going to music events or whatever, just that extreme speeding is what you associated with groups of young guys showing off.

The car was a model called - wait for it - the Flying Spur (!). Its makers brag that it can go from 0 to 60 in four seconds.

Bentley Flying Spur is available with a choice of three powertrains – a 4.0 litre V8 engine, a 6.0 litre W12 engine or a 2.9 litre V6 Bentley hybrid.
