A "significant minority" of schools in England are breaking new laws that were designed to make the admissions system fairer, the government has said.

In a sample three areas it found parents were being asked for information they did not have to give, and even for money.

my friend was interviewed at a LB Barnet state school they asked her

  • marital status
  • family Income
  • her and DH occupation
  • encouraged to make a "voluntary" contribution

quite outrageous, selection by any other name. so one unwittingly thrown to the whims/foibles/preferences/prejudices of a HT to gain admission

Just saw a report on newsnight though didn't catch all of it. Barnet one of the worst offenders apparently. Although I think they only spot checked a few.
