Dominic Cummings Covid evidence

Is anyone going to watch this man give evidence today?

Apparently there is a vigil in Barnard Castle ahead of this.

The shopping trolleys emoji seems to mean they think Carrie was controlling Boris from the last few days. Wonder if this will feature.

Surprised but not really at deletion

Takes me back to pandemic mocking in same vein, sadly.

You can’t undermine the vulnerability of groups and expect people to be ok with it.

Thanks for the updates @catscatscurrantscurrants None of the twitter accounts I was following reported on Jun Pang's evidence

I missed it because my live stream stopped functioning, unfortunately

DuncinToffee · 09/11/2023 18:45

Video clip of the question to Patel

“would you agree that the disproportionate imposition of fixed penalty notices on people of black & minority ethnic backgrounds did undermine public confidence in that scheme?”

Ok I will try to ignore those posts from now on

I feel strongly certain groups were let down in the pandemic

A post aimed at no one in particular.

Mine did too!

I'll try to watch the rest of Jun Pang's evidence later.

I am getting the distinct impression that there is a gaping need for a Cabinet Minister for Black and Asians so their voice can be heard in times of crisis?

I agree.

There is a Minister for Disabled people, a Minister for Women.
But I don't think there is a Minister fjr Asian, Black and minorities. - unless its called diversity of something.

The only issue is, under BJ during the Covid crisis, no-one was listened to.
Had there been a Minister for Black, Asians, minorities, no matter how hard they tried, I dont think they would have had a voice which would have been listened to.

It’s interesting you took that comment as you did, perhaps I’m more used to the intention

If anything comes out of the inquiry it’s hopefully to do as Save the Children did and identify the gaps for future pandemics

And children might have a chance against adults who override for own risk perspective - which is not always well assessed

AutumnCrow · 09/11/2023 21:16

We heard Priti Patel arguing today that she, the actual Home Secretary - one of the Great Offices of State fgs - could not be heard or was somehow overruled by Health & Cabinet Office. Although she was always havin' discussions obvs. Busy busy.

Hmm.

On one hand, I think she might be telling the truth and she wasn't listened to.

But then, I have to remind myself this is Priti Patel and I don't trust anything she says.
It's a bit like Nadine Dorries, Matt Hancock and ole BJ - if they told me grass is green, I'd have to go out and check.

bombastix · 09/11/2023 21:27

The entire inquiry reveals that the decision making by Johnson and cabal bore no resemblance to decision making as done by governments of every political stripe for hundreds of years.

He fancied himself a King. And he had a court.

He had plenty of form for disregarding the UK and its constitutional principles. A good book has been written about them which looks like it will need a second revised edition based on this inquiry.

It wouldn't have mattered if there had been a Minister for imperilled elderly lesbians, that person would have heard after the decision was made and had zero influence.

EasternStandard · 09/11/2023 21:33

In my view it’s more than just having people in place but the entire reaction of the public and the demand for harsher restrictions

The opposition to people speaking on behalf of neglected groups.

As I said in pp this female dominated parenting site should have been on the side of children

That it became so skewed with some trying incredibly hard to shut down those views was indicative of a huge societal error

Politicians reflect public demand. The PM at the time included

I would have liked more pressure to do as STC suggests, at the time. But since that has passed, for the next one.

That's exactly it @bombastix

We have a day of rest tomorrow.

They haven't released the agenda for next week, so I'm unsure whose up next.
But we do have Boris, Rishi and Matt to look forward to at some point.

Newtonianmechanics · 09/11/2023 21:58

I haven't had chance to follow as been super busy at work. Off to catch up now.

Also didn't she suggest people should report on their neighbours

Yes, she did
This is what she said at the time:

I'm rarely at home but if I saw something that I thought was inappropriate then, quite frankly, I would call the police."
"It's not dobbing in neighbours, it's all about us taking personal responsibility."
"Anyone that is effectively defying the rules, they will be helping to spread coronavirus,"
"That is not a good thing and obviously we all have a role to play."
"We're all taking personal responsibility, we all have to be conscientious to one another."

What an absolute hypocrite The lockdown itself was the very opposite of personal responsibility.

Fundamentally disagree with people wanting harsher restrictions or that politicians inc Bojo took notice of public opinion.....

Why? we were told over and over, response was science led.. people wanted earlier restrictions, that was argued on here and in certain sections of the press... ignored, in fact we got the opposite, the UK had quite mild restrictions compared to most of Europe e.g. we could exercise for as long as we liked, the 1 hour stuff was just taken from a comment by Gove.

As for ministers for this or that, the PM can and does overrule the current ones time and time again, as well as Children's Commissioners or Tsars.

Children in this country are let down time and time again, unless they go to private schools and have well off parents.... out comes for state ed kids are well below those in private .... but do these parents really care? they seem to be very much against paying VAT on school fees.... money which would go to less well children, its just hypocrisy.

Remember during the pandemic, it took a football player to get the Govt to feed children and many Tory supporters on here said he should stick to playing footie.....

Well, a lot of people on MN say a lot of things, especially during big events and at times of national crisis & election periods.

We have have no idea who anyone is. Just what they claim to be. Some will be genuine. Others will be shit-stirrer trolls, AI bots, junior spads, activists, bored posters, students & school kids who couldn't really care less what they're saying or being told and are just having a larf, posters who have PhDs in the subject, posters who couldn't name the current prime minister, journalists, freelancers, opinion pollsters, researchers, and good old pervy trolls who like being scolded by women. We have name-changers for good reasons, and not-so-good reasons, we have prolific posters and infrequent posters and lurkers. There are a few boards that have a more genuine 'feel' than others, fortunately.

EasternStandard · 11/11/2023 11:14

There were very few talking about harms to children and the greater impact on women during the pandemic on this site

The insults and mocking that returned would suggest people didn’t want to hear it 🤷‍♂️ In fact stronger than that it was key no one heard it.

A shame. Particularly on a parenting site. But that’s how they acted and it’s easy to see if anyone questions why it was so low consideration for so many.

It was risk perception for adults v damage to other groups.

Alexandra2001 · 11/11/2023 12:20

Well, i was on during the Pandemic (and Brexit) & my overwhelming take was most wanted restrictions earlier and that we took at face value Govt promises, Posters generally gave Boris (even me) gave him the benefit of the doubt and that children would be protected, monies found to help children... this, much like everything else we have been told over the last few years were lies.

The effects on children would have been very much reduced had the £15bn been found, instead they got £1.5bn.

Yes anybody can be whatever they like for whatever purpose, same on any SM platform i guess.

minou123 · 11/11/2023 21:43

I'm.not sure why you've posted this thread from November 2020.

I've had a quick scan and as far as I can see, everyone has a different opinion.

That's the great thing about Mumsnet, there is no "everyone thinks like this" -- (unless it's about cheeky fuckers or parking.)

But one comment from that thread stood out to me and thought was quite interesting and relevant for this Covid Inquiry:
The general public have lost all trust and faith in the government, the government have lost control.

What we learning from this Inquiry:
The government didnt lose control, it never had control to begin with.

If you want to see a "journslist" at work, this is a fun one to read.
