Dominic Cummings Covid evidence

Is anyone going to watch this man give evidence today?

Apparently there is a vigil in Barnard Castle ahead of this.

The shopping trolleys emoji seems to mean they think Carrie was controlling Boris from the last few days. Wonder if this will feature.

Thanks for those useful links, @DuncinToffee

“You were blindsided by the Treasury and there was nothing you could do?”

”Correct”

Wtaf?

bombastix · 07/11/2023 16:41

Yes the line there about people not wanting to work for Johnson is telling. I believe it was a long list.

Those who did work for him have been professionally damaged in many cases. I just think Johnson is blind to the fact that people saw those flaws he had from space. He didn't have that self awareness it seems.

Similar story on Brexit I think. Sunak brought in all the people who Johnson rejected or didn't like to do the Windsor Framework. Apparently

DuncinToffee · 07/11/2023 16:44

“Let the bodies pile high” rather than have another lockdown.

Lord Lister says he heard Boris Johnson say this in a meeting in Sept 2020 about the prospect of a circuit breaker - a prospect then backed by Matt Hancock

@DuncinToffee you only have to look at people like Therese Coffey or Gavin Williamson- would you employ them? Never mind put them in the cabinet

I have never heard this term before. Thank you fir enriching my lexicon!

I am looking for hope, but I'm not sure Sir John Bell is the beacon of light I'm looking for.

Oh well. He was reasonable but if he doesn’t do it for you, you don’t need to listen.

You would like full, lengthy inquiry. Ok your prerogative

The costs and damage of Covid and now this full inquiry with KCs going through WhatsApps line by line - that we don’t see elsewhere is more from taxpayer for Covid

I look at Sweden and envy their approach for women and children, but also for learning quickly.

Hopefully the next pandemic is a while off anyway.

Not sure who @PerkingFaintly is addressing, given their general unpleasant posting.. maybe just to show that a bit more.

Edited

Did you know that Andres Tegnell (Sweden) specifically implored Boris Johnson not to follow Sweden's example?

You too. Do you think a scientist talking about achievements in a pandemic is ‘sealioning’?

I mean I know the pp was trying to be insulting as possible as per, as that’s how they post.

But since it was Sir John Bell they were responding to, is that your view too?

Piggywaspushed · 07/11/2023 16:53

EasternStandard · 07/11/2023 16:27

This site was mostly minimising DV when it came to demanding lockdown

Oh, look - that was a great and moving post by Autumn and you have to go and undermine it.

Sorry that happened autumn.

Ermmm... no. I was genuinely fascinated by the term. I am a word magpie.

Crikeyalmighty · 07/11/2023 16:56

@EasternStandard I'm not a Tory as you know, but I do think it's very easy to see things with the luxury of hindsight. I think the Tory's behaviour regards certain aspects of governing the country was very not ok , along with their own behaviour during covid, but in certain aspects related to covid they were on a hiding to nothing whichever way they went. Lockdown- some agree, some don't- but at the time that's what most countries were doing- if we hadn't you can guarantee certain media would be doing their nut-- vaccines- similar problem. I do think they were wrong to try and make political capital of it by insisting we could have a few weeks quicker because we were not in EU. We were in Denmark at the time- the reason we had it starting 6 weeks later was because the EU had some concerns with Astra Zeneca vaccine and we're holding off for Pfizer and further tests

I didn’t undermine anything. This site was sadly very dismissive of DV against women and dc

It was upsetting to see. Not many called it out. Those that did were in the minority and attacked, by same posters as on here most likely.

As for Sweden I appreciate their approach due to fewer harms to women and dc

DuncinToffee · 07/11/2023 17:02

More baseless accusations.

It’s not hindsight if you felt strongly at the time that risks v damage needed to be reassessed.

I doubt it. Many were minimising damage and demanding lockdown or harsher restrictions

It’s all on here anyway.

EasternStandard · 07/11/2023 17:10

As for the attacks some of you are very committed, the insulting tone hasn’t changed much for last few years

Same names, similar posts, although back then highlighting DV to women and dc were included

extract from Patrick Vallance's diary shows that in Nov 2020 Vallance saw Johnson as "the only rational voice" on the political side" in pushing for more restrictions. Vallance saw Lister as engaged in "a game of getting votes" in wanting all areas in tier 1.

Seems that by this stage - late Nov 2020 – Johnson had moved on from 'let the bodies pile high'. Vallance quotes Johnson as saying: "What this disease has taught us is that hoping something will turn up and it will be OK is fucking stupid." Interesting.

Isn't it just. And Sunak's part starts to become clearer.

Crikeyalmighty · 07/11/2023 17:16

@EasternStandard I don't disagree- but as the rest of my post states, they were damned if they did and damned if they didn't- there are always 'winners and losers' ( in terms of opinion) if you base policies on public opinion on which way the wind is blowing at that point in time. - and I'm afraid I think that's how Johnson operated in the main. see Brexit for details - otherwise you could equally apply the risk assessment/damages situation to Brexit.

Lord Edward Udny-Lister has finished giving his evidence and hearings have now concluded for today. A full transcript of today’s hearing with both witnesses will be available on the website shortly with accessible versions available on request.

Yes I had an issue with public opinion creating the outcome we had to the extent it did. I think the comms approach created a feedback loop where people demanded more restrictions and did not see the damage

I posted in the minority, obviously it did bugger all but hard to watch all the same.

Brexit, I’m not sure what to say about that as another topic, but to link it back to thread title Cummings was a factor, as he was in partygate

Piggywaspushed · 07/11/2023 17:28

You seem to be suggesting that specific posters on this thread, who have not felt a need to name change, were specifically 'dismissive' of domestic violence and attacked people who specifically raised that concern. Do be careful in what you are claiming because that is a pretty dreadful thing to say.

I don’t feel the need to be careful, nor are u/n relevant to anything. It’s all here if anyone is interested in why a parenting site talked about Covid period as it did.

I know the response on this site. I know the insults and attacks.

It was sad, but prevalent. Particularly from pro restrictions posters.
