Vouchers here too - but I'm very curious about the book now! (or is thread part of the MN challenge? )

roisin · 07/03/2008 16:28

Is it this Cod?

Ours don't get free books, they get £1 vouchers.

Please confirm if it's the Dark Sun book, so I can go upstairs and nick it back off ds before he has time to read it.

CrackerOfNuts · 07/03/2008 21:06

Vouchers here too, but will make sure dd1 doesn't pick that one.

DualCycloneCod · 09/03/2008 19:42

Ooooh, I want to read it! Ds in Y4, so he chose captain underpants [vom emoticon] and read it in under 5 mins.

Dark Sun is from Robert Muchamore's Cherub series. It is very much aimed at teenagers, and on the WBD site says age 11+. I certainly would not recommend it for junior-school aged children.

(The series as a whole has quite a high level of violence, information about drugs/alcohol, and also teenage relationships/sex, etc.)

It's similar to Alex Rider, but aimed at a slightly older audience.

Having said all that I don't censor ds1's reading now, and he's read all the Cherub books and absolutely adores them. (He's 10 btw).

I'm not really into censoring books tbh, but it's a different thing for a school to be giving a book to a yr6 student - they should be treading more carefully.

roisin · 11/03/2008 16:14

Cod - at your school who chooses what books the students get? Ours all just got vouchers.

soapbox · 11/03/2008 16:23

Vouchers at our school too. I probably would let DD (9) read it though and just be prepared to discuss it with her afterwards.
