Does anyone care about the US election campaigns?

I can't believe the amount of airtime given to the election campaigns. Nowhere near as much coverage of leadership battles in the UK.

Although I'm not a Republican, I did get invited to a GOP convention in 1988 and went for the experience.

It really was an amazing time and the energy was incredible.

DOes anyone else think that HC's vocal inflections are just plain weird? Like a Speak Your Weight machine, or Tom Lehrer introducing a particularly sarcastic song.

SueBaroo · 05/03/2008 17:27

I think she's funny when she puts on the southern drawl. She sounds like my Dh trying to do a welsh accent.

ahundredtimes · 05/03/2008 17:27

Also Expat, about what you were saying. Isn't it right that Hilary won Texas because she won the majority of the Hispanic vote.

Hillary's voters are women, hispanics and low-income groups I read this morning.

I rather like who like her. I'm surprised too, I thought she would get the professional's vote rather than Obama. Don't know why though.

SueBaroo · 05/03/2008 17:28

I don't want her to win because I'm fed up of those pictures of her with her eyes all startled. They're creepy.

ahundredtimes · 05/03/2008 17:29

Oh I like her, I can't help it. Though don't press me on this, I'm a little shaky on her health care reforms.

seasidemama · 05/03/2008 17:32

Anyone else buying the notion that the two of them may end up as running mates? Who goes at the top of the ticket though? Could it really work?

policywonk · 05/03/2008 17:32

I think I'm still leaning towards her, mostly at a tribal (female) level. I think it's true that Obama hasn't been tested yet. However, Obama would stand a better chance of beating McCain, wouldn't he? And McCain does have some seriously nut-job policy stances.

I am almost entirely neutral, tbh. My natural instincts would prevent me actually voting for either Hillary or Obama, but I wouldn't vote for McCain either. Might have voted Ron Paul, he was a right laugh.

finknottle · 05/03/2008 17:35

"Bomb bomb bomb Iran" - McCain, mmm.

policywonk, HC' voice is rather odd I agree, robotic at times with weird inflection. Obama ditto though, when you hear soundbites it's not as noticeable but there were longer excerpts on TV today which made me notice his voice.
I have to feed the hungry ones now but would happily tune in tomorrow if anyone starts a Election USA thread, with a more inviting title
And food for thought, as it were, the Texas caucuses? All those people who didn't even knew they existed till this year taking part. Still, 2000 was exciting too and look what happened
Dratted children, can't they eat the rugs or something?

expatinscotland · 05/03/2008 17:36

It's entirely possible that was very influential in her winning in Texas.

Voter turnout was high.

This is the site I log onto every day:

ahundredtimes · 05/03/2008 17:37

Yes, she's competent and smart, very very smart I think.
I've always liked her for some reason, and hated it when she had to stop being Hillary Rodham and hold cake parties at the White House. The indignity!

He's smooth Obama, charming and articulate. Though I suppose I'm suspicious of the 'feel good' rousing speeches. But then it's a bit unfair because really I'm NOT that hot on their policies. I am going entirely on gossip and hearsay.

[picks up Vanity Fair]

suedonim · 05/03/2008 17:37

Suebaroo, why are some Republicans ticked off about McCain? (Can't look at Youtube here in Nigeria, if the answer is there!)

moopymoo · 05/03/2008 17:38

thats an interesting site expat.
I am massively interested. In so many ways, the outcomes of this election are more important than our domestic politics. And I love the West Wing.

SueBaroo · 05/03/2008 17:40

Depends who I talk to, tbh. Self-serving and lack-lustre are the things I hear most. But then, most Republicans I know are fairly irritated by the GOP itself and believe (and I agree with them) that it has been it's own worst enemy.

expatinscotland · 05/03/2008 17:41

Oh, there's no doubting she's a very, very clever woman.

She had a long and successful career as a lawyer before her husband became president and is a graduate of the Yale Law School, where she was a distinguished student.

ThingOne · 05/03/2008 17:42

Another one here who is massively interested. I was buzzing wit excitement for hours this morning.

I worry that Obama is another Tony Blair, all charm and lovely words, untainted by experience who will be a hug let down.

And I'm all tribal about Hillary despite her flaws. Difference is I know them and don't know his. How come although I am repulsed by BC's behaviour on several things I can never quite get him out of my heart?

expatinscotland · 05/03/2008 17:44

Obama has had just an interesting a career, he's just not got as much press here as Hilary.

There are some interesting things about him, as well.

For instance, he has a half-sister in England who is British and whom he did not know about growing up - his Kenyan father was mostly out of contact after he and Obama's mother divorced.

ALMummy · 05/03/2008 18:57

I do. Makes me feel hopeful to think of a woman in the White House.

mumblechum · 05/03/2008 19:01

I am quite interested and hope BO gets in.

I'm much less interested in the whole Palestine/Israel thing and think the BBC etc should stop broadcasting about it, just let us know when they've either achieved peace or completely annihilated each other.

Anthing else isn't news, its just same old same old.

sis · 05/03/2008 19:23

ahundredtimes, at least Hillary has health care reform plans - an issue she clearly feels strongly about since she has worked on it since her husband was President.

ahundredtimes · 05/03/2008 19:36

Oh yes sis, I wasn't dissing Hillary - I was dissing myself for focusing on the 'personalities' and my enjoyment of the whole drama, rather than my having any in depth understanding of their policies.

sis · 06/03/2008 20:30

I know you weren't - I was just taking the opportunity to say good things about her.
