The Herald of Free Enterprise disaster. Horrific; I was about ten and had nightmares for weeks. I don’t think people shielded young kids from the news in those days as much as they do today. Your parents would sit down to watch the news at 6pm and 9pm and you had to be quiet while it was on.

Yes. I was also 10 and this is what I have vivid memories of. And Lockerbie and Piper Alpha but I expect they're still well known.

ShoesoftheWorld · 22/06/2023 06:44

Lots previously mentioned.

The Mary Rose - that was my first conscious memory of the news.
The murder of Carl Bridgewater
The broadcast ban - Gerry Adams being voiced by an actor. Odd the same didn't apply to Ian Paisley. Hmm
Mandela being freed
The USSR coup, with Boris Yeltsin standing on a tank
Thatcher being stabbed in the back and resigning

ShoesoftheWorld · 22/06/2023 06:47

And poignantly, Anne Diamond campaigning for babies to sleep on their backs after losing one of her children to SIDS, and the rates going into steep decline after that.

sashagabadon · 22/06/2023 06:48

OJ Simpson. I watched the police chase his white car down the highway in LA for about an hour.
if the glove don’t fit, you must aquit!

All the people who were held for years as hostages in Beirut. Terry Waite, Brian Keenan.

MissJoGrant · 22/06/2023 06:51

The cones hotline.

User195376587 · 22/06/2023 06:52

Aberfan, I was about the same age as the DC so we definitely weren't shielded from the news as I remember it clearly.

DaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisy · 22/06/2023 06:59

The Enfield Poltergeist and all those other weird stories in the 70's of kids being possessed!

Firstnamelastname123 · 22/06/2023 07:00

Summer land disaster in Isle of Man in August 1973 - 50 people killed and 80 people seriously injured in a fire likened to the Blitz.

I was camping with a youth group in Southend and an adult was reading out loud from the newspaper about it - very gory and scary.

This, its so tragic and gets very little recognition. I only heard of it as my mum's ex boyfriend was one of the victims. So many life's ended and altered that day. All over a quick ciggie behind the complex.

Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight · 22/06/2023 07:08

Brixton riots

more lighthearted - Erica Roe

Rubycoola · 22/06/2023 07:09

The Shergar kidnapping. I mentioned it to my husband recently and he hadn't heard of it!

All the IRA bombings of the 80s and 90s. The Arndale bomb and a random bomb left at Wilmslow station (near us) and it almost seemed normal at the time.

groupery · 22/06/2023 07:10

Younger people will have heard of loads of these things because they learn about them through tv eg Chernobyl or history lessons. Plus plenty of news today references past events eg winter of discontent is topical with todays issues, other terror attacks when talking about todays ones etc.

Rubycoola · 22/06/2023 07:10

@ShoesoftheWorld Mary Rose is my first memory of the news too!

SabrinaThwaite · 22/06/2023 07:15

Three day week with planned power cuts - we had an electric cooker so dinners had to be carefully planned, and then we’d end up playing card games or board games by candlelight.

Arab-Israeli wars were forever rumbling on.

Oil crisis and petrol hitting 70p a gallon.

I think youngsters today will know about the Troubles but maybe not the amount it spilled over into England?

sandgrown · 22/06/2023 07:16

The moors murders . I was out alone walking my dog about 5 miles from the moors and the police stopped me and asked if I often walked alone . I had no idea why . The Aberfan disaster upset me . I was watching parents digging with their bare hands .

whataboutme77 · 22/06/2023 07:21

The Cleveland child abuse scandal.
121 children taken off families in a short space of time mostly as a result of one doctor and her assistant finding signs of abuse.
It was a huge news story then a little later an enquiry that went on and on.

NUS strike in 1966 largely dur to a union rep John Prescott. Caused flagging out and the loss of thé British merchant fleet.

Newnamenewname109870 · 22/06/2023 07:27

There was a girl who went missing, I can’t even remember her name. She’s not a case that gets revisited and it was my first realisation that some kids aren’t found.

Kazzyhoward · 22/06/2023 07:31

Manchester Arndale IRA bomb
Bradford football stadium fire
All the strikes and power cuts in the 70s

Was going to say this. Everything virtually that's been mentioned was important or very famous at the time.
I see the OP has started more than one thread along the same lines and it looks like another tedious Chatgpt generated thread anyway.
(If you haven't already folks, same OP has one about famous people- are we doing songs next @Brettthepei ?) 🙄

Think you missed the brief.
Things that young people won't have heard of, not things that even teenagers born in 2008 study at school.

You were in both places? How unfortunate.
