I watched a BBC interview just now and what a vile, horrible man he cam across as. I admired the interviewer who kept to her points.

the really worrying thing is how many young teenage boys who follow and admire him and agree with his views.

Why would someone need to look up to someone in the media? I can't think of many people in public life I'd want my daughter to look up to, either. Most people in the public eye are useless people by definition.

Focus closer to home. Uncles, grandfathers, friends' husbands who are decent men, sports coaches at clubs he goes to, intelligent work colleagues you could introduce him to, male friends of yours he could talk to, take him to events/ exhibitions related to subjects that interest him and find people there for him to talk to... endless options of decent men all over the place just going about their daily lives.

Well thats the problem, isn't it?

You really can't think of any positive masculine male role models? Out of the whole wide world nobody springs to mind?

You know Andrew Tate is a misogynist ego maniac, yet you are happy your son watches and is "delighted" with his videos.

You are taking my words out on context completely. I said he was delighted to share them with me, I never said I was happy about it.

And you clearly can't think of any either!!! But would rather spend your effort insulting me.

I simply stated that luckily my son seems able to take filter out some of the positive stuff Tate says and filter out the bad, which Ia.happy about. Doesn't mean I'm not worried and that I don't think Tate is a prick.

Room102 · 03/06/2023 01:27

Even in terms of public figures I can think of many men worth admiring. David Attenborough, Barack Obama, Roger Federer, Mo Farah, and many others.

Very little men in my family and the ones that are still alive are ones I would not want him associating with.

I only say in the media as it would be easier to swap out Tate for someone else he can watch on YouTube.

He has mentioned about wanting to do kickboxing or karate, I'm hoping there would be some good role models there.

I'm guessing I'm also just lamenting about how little role models/positive messaging there is out there in the public sphere for young boys that celebrates positive and virtuous sides of masculinity! Super heroes....maybe??? But I don't think that counts!! He loved doctor who, the older grey haired one, and I liked that he wanted to be like the doctor, this man who used his brain and his heart to solve problems rather than his fists, but he seemed like... still strongwilled and gentlemanly and chivalrous and believed in honour. But then he went off it.

There aren't, though. I've listed some already. There are loads more.

I could try these. Thankyou

I remember when I was a kid I used to want Sir Trevor Macdonald to be my dad haha

If only David Attenborough had TikTok lol

(Ps before you all pile on me my son does not have TikTok)

Does Tom Hardy have a social media presence? Cos he is quite traditionally masculine but like in a good way...and not a dick!

Rubbish. Your first post was all about how happy you are your son is watching Andrew Tate and is now doing chores etc.

Of course I can think a lots of positive male role models both personally and in the media.

Here's the issue - I'm not your son's parent - you are.
I find it concerning that at 1.30am I can think of lots of male role models, yet you can't.
Seeing as you are struggling, I'll give you a clue to my first example of an excellent male role model: he was the US President from 2009 to 2017.

I'm not insulting you. I do think you're full of shit. For example, your 11 year old son doesn't fully understand the teachings of toxic masculinity, yet he has the miraculous ability to filter the bad stuff out of Andrew Tates videos?

minou123 · 03/06/2023 01:39

Sorry, I'm getting angry now. I'm off to before I say something I really regret .

Room102 · 03/06/2023 01:41

Marcus Rashford...

It depends what values you think he is lacking and needs support with.

But I would question why he's lacking these, and why you even for a second thought Andrew Tate of all people would be a good solution.

It's either bullshit, or it's very concerning.

toomuchlaundry · 03/06/2023 01:42

Does he do any clubs or activities @Letshearitfor? Are there any local community groups that have male leaders you can discuss with him. I would rather DS looked up to someone doing good for the community rather than an overpaid male celebrity.

Marcus rashford is a brilliant one. Thankyou.

You're just taking the piss now. An alcoholic/ crack addict is your idea of a role model?

I'm out.

Allmyghosts · 03/06/2023 01:56

Why all the deletions, what's the point? It's as if people can't possibly cope if someone says things they don't agree with. Haven't seen anything tate, but all those defending the BBC as arbiters of truth are actual idiots. Has the the gender critical shit just passed you by?

Allmyghosts · 03/06/2023 01:58

Bruce Parry is my idea of positive masculinity (posh, and privileged obv) but frigging swoon.

Bouledeneige · 03/06/2023 05:16

Toxic masculinity is often informed by feelings of deep self loathing and inadequacy. Underneath it all AT knows women are more than equal to men and he has no answer to that - incapable of forming equal and supportive relationships or working for good purpose. He doesn't get on with his sister - a feminist lawyer and mother. He's a failed kick boxer. See where his wretched insecurity comes from?

Toofartoomuch · 03/06/2023 06:15

I've just watched the interview and every single comment on the clip is in praise of Andrew Tate. That's highly unlikely. Looks like all negative ones have been removed.

DorisParchment · 03/06/2023 06:37

@HotSince82 his Dad was ex US Air Force. And he got kicked out because he lost his security clearance for being mentally unstable/borderline psychotic.

Allblackeverythingalways · 03/06/2023 09:00

There's so many wonderful men out there, why do kids like this one?

This is exactly it! There is a such an over repeated message against men and masculinity at the moment, so I imagine a lot of boys feel quite fed up and lost, which is why we have all those incels which is my nightmare for my son. My son got really upset and obsessed with the idea that he was 'toxic' just because he was a boy. Then this Tate comes along and they all jump on it cos it's not a message they are used to hearing, one that says masculinity can actually be a good thing if channeled properly. Unfortunately they are taking the bad with the good, there is a lot of actual toxicity with tate. But I have been racking my brain trying to think of other positive masculine male role models to point him towards instead of Tate, but really who is there?

Genuine question. Please someone suggest someone!!

The following may be worth a shot:

Jocko Willink
Chris Williamson
David Goggins.

None of them a flash and out there like the Tates hence they probably don't get the same traction amongst teens. Let's be honest a lot of boys are attracted to Tate due to the fast cars and attractive women.

NP101 · 03/06/2023 15:31

Andrew HUberman & Lex Fridman also very good. Those are the sorts of people I'd want my son to look up to if I had one.

Numerous sports stars too @Letshearitfor someone young like the tennis star Carlos Alcaraz would be a good one to look up to.

Yes I'm a big fan of his podcast. He is also multifaceted and at the top of his game in many different disciplines from AI to jiu jitsu.

Another podcast I like a lot just released an episode relevant to this thread:

The Crisis of Masculinity & Destruction of Male Role Models

Bear grylls- much more masculine then Tate as he actually does stuff but doesn't have the toxic masculinity thing going on (as far as I have seen) his ethos for life and his approach to giving everything 💯 is impressive. Plus he is ex army, SAS (I think) and generally seems a decent family guy on top off all the crazy stuff he has done.
