It’s not, they are saying ‘tragic incident’ not accident.

Not on the site where I read it. Definitely referred to as "accident". But accident or incident, it should be a crime, I am so fed up of these owners going unpunished or getting off very lightly.

bookworm14 · 31/01/2023 22:37

Poor little girl.

For all the bleating about ‘it’s the owner, not the breed!’ and ‘any breed can be dangerous!!’, we all know what type of dog this is going to be. Yes, any dog can bite, but it’s always the same breeds that kill, and these types of attack seem to be getting more frequent. I won’t hold my breath for anything to be done about it, though.

Fucking hell

RichardOsmansXraySpecs · 31/01/2023 22:41

I agree it should be a crime, the same as you would be prosecuted if you let your (or someone else's) kid play with guns.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 31/01/2023 22:41

we all know what type of dog this is going to be
Maybe, but otoh, that’s exactly what pp on MN threads were saying about the dog walker and that was not the case as we now know.

reddwarfgeek · 31/01/2023 22:43

Poor baby 😔😥
Such a sad waste of her young life.
We need stricter rules around dogs.
I don't like them, and I don't take any chances with DD. I don't care if people say they are safe or if they think I'm weird.
I wish something would be done, these stories are heartbreaking.

SpinningFloppa · 31/01/2023 22:44

It definitely IS the breed, don’t know why people have these things around their children!

Absolutely. I think there were a number of posters sorely disappointed to be honest.

Well it's not going to be a shih tzu is it?

Why do people have those kinds of dogs with young kids, I just don't get it.

Why do people have those dogs at all??

People need to start being held accountable for keeping powerful dogs in their homes. Something has to be done about this now, surely? I appreciate that no breed has been mentioned yet, however, as a previous poster said, it's not likely to be a Bichon.

I work with exclusively with dogs, I adore dogs. Last week, I was bitten by a Yorkshire Terrier. It hurt, and it bled, and the dog meant it, but it did not cause me significant harm. So yes, while it absolutely can be 'any breed,' the breed is extremely relevant! The same situation with certain other breeds would not have had the same outcome. The continuous wails from people protesting that 'it's not the breed, it's the owner,' makes no sense to me. Of course with the right training and home, I have no doubt that some of these dogs can be wonderful. However, your average 3 bed semi, 2.4 children type scenario is not the right home, and very often lacks adequate training. You have these dogs, you have to be on top of EVERY aspect of their training and behaviour. In an ideal world, all dogs would be trained and well behaved, however for many breeds, the potential for damage is not so catastrophic. Quite why ANYONE needs or wants a creature with such an insane amount of power, living in their home, baffles me, especially one which isn't trained to within an inch of it's life.

Poor little girl. It's utterly heartbreaking.

ginghamstarfish · 31/01/2023 22:51

Outrageous that nothing is done. Imagine the number of biting incidents that go unreported too.

So sad this has happened once again. Feel sorry for the child and the dog. Both under control of not responsible adults

curlymacv · 31/01/2023 22:59

People are crazy to leave children unattended with their dogs ... I wouldn't let a young child around my dogs if I wasn't there to eagle eye them - and mine are ancient and decrepit!

bensmokes · 31/01/2023 23:04

Netherfield is an exceptionally deprived area. I can imagine what kind of breed was responsible.

It's not very different to people carrying knives to look hard.

Like leaving a loaded weapon in your home.

Poor child.

bumblebee1987 · 31/01/2023 23:13

@userxx Have they confirmed the breeds involved in the case with the dog walker? I had only heard of 3 breeds mentioned, not the breeds of the remaining four dogs?

DuckDuckNo · 31/01/2023 23:17

Everyone keeps saying it's the owner not the breed but.. Dogs are bred for a reason. Some dogs are bred for herding. Some for running. Some for guarding. Some for company. And some dogs are bred for fighting. Bully breeds are not safe.

Babycakes6 · 01/02/2023 00:07

My friend passed by a house with American bully and the dog managed to jump and bite him! 😬

Grimchmas · 01/02/2023 00:24

I can't find anything confirming which breed(s) killed the dog walker, either (although I've just been looking and read more details about the incident than I wish I had - utterly horrendous).

Poor 4 year old kid. Is it just me does it sound like the dog was or was at least suspected to be loose for a bit after the attack? I'm speculating but if so it could have been an attack by a stranger's dog on the street.

There's a worrying excess of lockdown pups who haven't been properly socialised or trained, following the pandemic, and an equally worrying deficit of knowledge about dog training, handling and behaviour.

Grimchmas · 01/02/2023 00:28

I do agree with you, but it is also affected by the handling and training of the dog. If nothing else a competent and knowledgeable handler would be less likely to have let the incident happen.

(I don't think we should have bull breeds either, or perhaps not without being qualified and licensed).

TheEarlofButties · 01/02/2023 06:57

@bumblebee1987 I agree, but that’s precisely why many people buy those type of breeds, because of their power, buying dogs for some is like fashion for some. It’s the same reason some want exhausts the size of drainpipes or steroid induced muscles.
Good that we’re following police advice not to speculate on social media though!

Dog owners like this don’t care, nothing changes and dc die

So sad

Reading between the lines, I think it was the family dog.

It was put down at the scene. No mention of searching, or trying to find owner etc
