The police have said there were no signs in the mud of footprints from her or the dog, no signs of slipping/falling in, no signs of a struggle.

When did the police say this? Do you have a link for this?

she had wellington’s and a long thick coat on. If she lost her footing with heavy clothing on it hard to move in water. Sadly you can drown quickly even in water that’s not deep and the river will still be moving and have some current.

They said short wellies I think, so ankle boots, not cumbersome big wellies ?
DH was talking about this earlier. He works with search and rescue, so has experience in searches for missing people. They do look for traces of undergrowth disturbance , small things that might have been dropped.
Initially I assumed she had fallen into fast flowing and deep water, trying to get the dog. However from what local people are saying here the river there would have been fairly shallow and slow moving ? It is really strange, I very much hope that she has had a crisis and taken herself off somewhere and will be found safe. DH did take part in a search for a man that was really concerning as he was thought to be suicidal , but thankfully he was found two weeks later, he wasn’t coping so had just gone off and eventually came home.
Leaving the dog loose is the weirdest thing though, for someone who wants to disappear.
I would have though that sniffer dogs would have been able to track whether she had fallen into the water ?

Oaktree55 · 02/02/2023 12:36

The dog was found agitated in the vicinity of river. If she’d walked off/been taken dog would follow scent everything points to tragic accident in river however freak it was.

ImprobablePuffin · 02/02/2023 12:43

"By anyone you mean somone who knows her well enough to know her full name to find her on strava or someone who decided on where they wanted to abduct a woman from then searched Strava to find someone who used to walk that route a couple of months ago?

I really can't see it"

What I mean is if someone took an interest in her then it's not difficult to know where to look to gather information. It's not hard in this day and age to target an individual if they have an online presence. Anyway I'm not saying this is what happened, it's just a thought.

OntarioBagnet · 02/02/2023 12:43

A friends relative disappeared in very similar circumstances a few years ago. No sign of footprints, etc on the river bank. No clothes or shoes found either on the bank or in the water. Sadly it wasn’t a happy ending and was nine weeks before they were found in an even smaller (non tidal) water way. So just to say there may not be a quick conclusion to this.

Catstaps · 02/02/2023 12:44

Yes the dog was still along the river bank because it knew she was in there. There was a sign saying deep water and you can clearly see a current. It doesn’t need to be deep for you to lose balance and your face to hit the water. You can panic, feel shock with freezing water and if you’re clothed you feel like lead. She clearly wasnt suicidal and had protective factors like young children and a dog with her going on a regular walk. She’s tried to help the dog ( never do it, they can get out) and the worst has happened I’m afraid.

itsnote · 02/02/2023 12:47

How would the dog open the gate?

But where is her body?

And the dog was dry. If it had fallen into the river and she tried to help the dog, the dog would have been wet

You say all this with a lot of certainty

The body of my friends relative was found ten miles from where he entered the water. And it’s likely he was underwater for most of that. Bodies can get caught up in tree roots, etc. hope I’m wrong but it’s not looking very good.

Catstaps · 02/02/2023 12:52

the dog may have just been at the bottom of the bank and she’s gone down to try and get it, or it dried by the time they found it as it was running around , or just got it legs wet. It can be very hard to find a body in a river and by the looks of it it’s quite a wide river..

How would the dog open the gate?

Do we know if the woman who found the dog found it near the gate or near the bench, or just running in the field?

Catstaps · 02/02/2023 12:55

they probably didn’t start looking in river for a day or two by that time the body can have travelled for miles under water.

Catstaps · 02/02/2023 12:55

Why do you say that?

do you really think the river isn’t the first place they would have searched?

Oaktree55 · 02/02/2023 13:05

No one knows what happened but I think these threads show how people underestimate cold water and what can happen however freak. That’s how so many accidents around water happen. Yes it looks still, shallow etc but can still be lethal.

Oaktree55 · 02/02/2023 13:07

My dog rarely goes through a gate rather squeezes through hedges etc instead. The breed in question could probably have jumped it anyway if wanted to.

Update - have just now cordoned off the bench.

TessasFoot · 02/02/2023 13:13

The police have sealed off the path now. An unfortunate accident, most likely. Very sad, my heart breaks for her family.

madeyemoody · 02/02/2023 13:14

@MayThe4th the search team released her Facebook as she has strava walking routes and her walking routes were used by the search teams and shared to others when the search began so they knew the exact locations she walks through. You have half the information and have made a massive generalisation here. The Facebook page was public until December because she was involved in a charity event and was collecting miles via walking. Calling Facebook voyeuristic is ridiculous, it's a public platform meant to be viewed.

Oaktree55 · 02/02/2023 13:16

Given recent heavy rain and tree falls which occur as a result the river near us is full of fallen branches, trees debris etc and whatever else washes in with tide. There’ll be a lot for a body to get caught up in.

madeyemoody · 02/02/2023 13:17

@TintyMinty which is why people have little faith in the police sometimes. They have their methods but the public and everyone has been traipsing through there, I have no legal background but know enough that access should never have been allowed. Hundreds of people have voiced the same confusion as to why it wasn't blocked earlier. I hope they haven't lost crucial evidence. I really do. This poor poor family

madeyemoody · 02/02/2023 13:17

@Catstaps the river was searched within hours of her going missing. The response was very rapid.

madeyemoody · 02/02/2023 13:18

@TintyMinty I can't read that it's behind a paywall, I may have gotten the wrong end of the stick has it been sealed for safety or sealed for further investigation/forensics

TintyMinty · 02/02/2023 13:21

No idea why path has been closed:

new development (may have found her?)
new evidence
