Sunak & the Seat belt

He's apologised for being filmed in a moving car without wearing his seatbelt.

Lancashire Police are currently investigating.

Just wondering if an apology will be enough and whether it will set a standard that will mean other passengers who might get pulled over, if they apologise for not wearing their seatbelt in the back of a car whether they may get the same treatment as Sunak will or has?

Also, why are there no penalty points for such an infringement of not wearing your seatbelt? Surely that's a no brainer.

Anyway...as you were.

Penalty points for who? Sunak or the driver? If the passenger isn’t a driver it’s likely not a deterrent in the same way a fine is.

But we all know the law doesn’t apply to these fuckknuckles so nothing will happen.

wonderstuff · 20/01/2023 08:12

It’s just so stupid isn’t it? Such a basic thing to get wrong.

JingsMahBucket · 20/01/2023 08:15

I can’t stand tories at all but this is the most dumb press fueled distraction ever. There are much bigger fish to fry and missteps to nail him on. It’s so fucking petty and dumb.

I agree. What a fucking waste of everyone's time

Lampan · 20/01/2023 08:16

Idiot. Maybe he doesn’t bother to wear a seatbelt at all, otherwise how would be comfortable in a moving car without one?

BitOutOfPractice · 20/01/2023 08:19

What the hell?

First of all I can’t watch that video without cringing inside out. It’s delivered like a cbbc presenter! They’ve clearly thought they’d film it like this so he appears to be ‘just like us’ - except he’s not because the law doesn’t apply to him!

What was the person filming even thinking of? Let alone him ffs!

This ‘I’m above the law’ mentality continues.

Sunak is not the first public figure to be pictured without a seat belt. The late Duke of Edinburgh was too, shortly after he had that car crash. He was just “given some words of advice” by the police. The royals often don’t wear seat belts; one of them paid the price for that.

I agree up to a point. But he's broken the law, as PP said how can they stop and fine people in future (I think the driver gets fined too if a passenger doesn't wear his
Belt) if they don't make an example of him? It sends out a message to those who think they're above the law as well as everyone else so I don't think it's as trivial as it first seems. But I bet he gets away with it.

BitOutOfPractice · 20/01/2023 08:22

The way he says “levelling up fund!” With about 4 verbal exclamation marks gives me the rage. He might as well use jazz hands as well to emphasise how jolly he finds economic inequality.

PuttingDownRoots · 20/01/2023 08:24

I think I read the "punishment" is usually an £100 fine. Its not worth the police time really... its loose change to Sunak.

A proper apology and a larger donation to a road safety charity would be a lot more beneficial

(Then the police could spend their time sorting out their own major problem)

Not only that, but it’s the second time he’ll have broken the law, while in high office.

trythisforsize · 20/01/2023 08:26

I agree this 'roving reporter" type clip makes him look totally unprofessional. it's embarrassing. I don't like the Tories but I felt some respect for Sunak - that has now completely gone.

LlynTegid · 20/01/2023 08:27

If the penalty can be a fine then he should be fined.

I think Philip was on private land so legally different

I think, @trythisforsize thst he probably thinks this is how younger people, who aren’t that keen on the tories in general, like to receive news. That’s why he’s doing it social media style. But it really doesn’t work does it?

if you feel like this where does it end, what other law can the prime minister break, yes on the face of it it is petty but he has broken a law, a law that if you were a passenger in a car doing the same thing you quite rightly could be fined so why not him

megletthesecond · 20/01/2023 08:41

It sums him up really. Arrogant idiot who doesn't think wonderful him could possibly ever be in a crash. Pity they can't give him an obscene fine that would really hurt.
I've never forgotten my seat belt in forty years.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 20/01/2023 08:49

Exactly this.

The royals often don’t wear seat belts; one of them paid the price for that.
And it isn't just the unbelted passenger that can be injured :killed - remember the awful advert about the passenger being thrown forward and killing the person in front? The law is there for a reason.

Primarily for the two points above, I really don't get why people think this is trivial?

LookItsMeAgain · 20/01/2023 09:15

Penalty points for the driver because they didn't ensure that the passengers they were getting from point A to B weren't properly secure in their vehicle.
I might even suggest for Sunak too (if he has a license) as he knows the rules of the road in order to get that license.

No. Happy to stand corrected but isn’t the driver penalised if a passenger isn’t wearing a belt?

Just demonstrates that he’s another arrogant, inconsiderate bastard in a long line.

I don’t want someone like that making policy decisions that affect millions.

I agree! This is one of the most dumbest things to worried about!

KnittedCardi · 20/01/2023 10:26

Meanwhile back in the real world, no-one is routinely fined for not wearing a seatbelt. I suspect if the police even bother to stop you, you would just get a word of warning, like with minor speeding, or any other minor road transgression.

Oldandcobwebby · 20/01/2023 10:31

I'm more concerned about our illustrious former chancellor of the exchequer's unpaid taxes. The BBC weren't so quick to report that, were they? It's all about distraction.

DRS1970 · 20/01/2023 10:36

It may seem pretty petty. But I think it fuels the one rule for them, and one rule for everyone else argument, that was nurtured by party gate. So people are bound to get upset about it.
