He's apologised for being filmed in a moving car without wearing his seatbelt.
www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-64337866

Lancashire Police are currently investigating.

Just wondering if an apology will be enough and whether it will set a standard that will mean other passengers who might get pulled over, if they apologise for not wearing their seatbelt in the back of a car whether they may get the same treatment as Sunak will or has?

Also, why are there no penalty points for such an infringement of not wearing your seatbelt? Surely that's a no brainer.

Anyway...as you were.

It is being reported today that the Prime Minister has apologised for his error in judgement in not wearing a seat belt.
When is he going to apologise for his error of judgement in thinking that he is a suitable person to be Prime Minister?

I'm more concerned about our illustrious former chancellor of the exchequer's unpaid taxes. The BBC weren't so quick to report that, were they? It's all about distraction“

I heard it reported several times throughout the day 🤷‍♀️

MrsSkylerWhite · 20/01/2023 10:40

if you feel like this where does it end, what other law can the prime minister break, yes on the face of it it is petty but he has broken a law, a law that if you were a passenger in a car doing the same thing you quite rightly could be fined so why not him“

Putting his professional driver at risk of a fine/penalty points is not petty.

beguilingeyes · 20/01/2023 10:41

I'm more incensed by the fact that he's taking private planes everywhere. The train not good enough for him?

MarshaMelrose · 20/01/2023 10:44

People who don't like him or the Tories will be incensed at such appalling behaviour. Just about everyone else will be , meh.

@MarshaMelrose would you be so kind as to inform us as to which other laws it is acceptable for the Prime Minister to break? Is it acceptable for anyone who feels like it to break those laws?

Yeah, yeah. Give me 5 minutes and I'll detail them all. 🙄

Meanwhile back in the real world, no-one is routinely fined for not wearing a seatbelt. I suspect if the police even bother to stop you, you would just get a word of warning, like with minor speeding, or any other minor road transgression.

not correct , people get fined daily for not wearing a seat belt.

My DH did for taking his seat belt of temporarily to deal with a vomiting child beside him in the back.

This from the summer in Hull

I like a willing audience. Just digging through the law books now. On family law, at the moment.

prh47bridge · 20/01/2023 16:13

Because people who don't wear seatbelts may not be drivers.

Putting his professional driver at risk of a fine/penalty points is not petty.

He didn't. There are no penalty points for this offence. The driver can only be fined if a child under 14 is not wearing a seatbelt. The only person liable if an adult doesn't wear a seatbelt is the adult concerned.

Goodness it must be a long list of laws you are happy for the Prime Minister to break @MarshaMelrose Don't worry though we have time to await your answer.

Lancashire Police fine Rishi Sunak for failing to wear a seatbelt.

What does everyone have against being rich at the moment ?
do you think our next prime minister is going to be scrabbling behind the sofa for his bus fare ?

EmmaEmerald · 20/01/2023 22:11

I'm confused re the law

if you are in a minicab, how come they don't tell you to put your seatbelt on? I do but mum prefers not to!

EmmaEmerald · 20/01/2023 22:14

To add, I'd have thought the driver wouldn't want the hassle of being pulled over, I realise the adult passenger pays the fine.

Roselilly36 · 20/01/2023 19:54

You think it is a distraction?
I think for many people it will be a reminder that Sunak also broke the law by partying during lockdown when many could not visit relatives and so on.

Anyway @MarshaMelrose is soon going to provide us with a list of laws it is acceptable for the Prime Minister to break.

countrygirl99 · 21/01/2023 06:18

About 30% of car occupants killed in accidents weren't wearing a seat belt. Apparently this has been going up so the government have been considering increasing the penalties. So it's not like it wasn't on the radar as an issue.

countrygirl99 · 21/01/2023 06:19

Still it distracts people from Zahawi's tax, the governments poor performance etc so maybe they consider the fine a bargain.

User16458769 · 21/01/2023 06:34

I suppose it is a reminder to people that it is the law to wear them in the back of the car as I'm sure some people forget this and it is right he got the same treatment as anyone else, fines only affect poorer people though but passengers may not be drivers so they can't really give points

I think it is more likely to serve as a reminder that our twice law breaking Prime Minister Sunak thinks that the law is for the little people and not for him.
