Story here. I hope the authorities take immediate and authoritative steps to stamp this out. This has no place in 2008.

Apparently Spain has a particular problem with even the spanish f1 commentators using racist terms last season

the spanish are v jealous that he did better than alonso last year, i think that is where this is coming from.

BigBadMouse · 04/02/2008 16:16

It is fuelled by his rivalry with teammate Alonso but that is no excuse of course.

Some of the things I heard said last year were not exactly pleasant - but the Spanish were saying how shocked they were that we had a black british driver as they think we are a very racist country .

BigBadMouse · 04/02/2008 16:16

sorry 'former' teammate

marina · 04/02/2008 16:18

So the Spanish haven't ever seen the English football team playing then BigBadMouse? Their argument hardly stands up really

fortyplus · 04/02/2008 16:22

When you see that the abuse took the form of spectators wearing monkey masks and t-shirts scrawled with 'Hamilton's family' it makes you wonder why they weren't immediately ejected from the track.

BigBadMouse · 04/02/2008 16:24

Well quite...I won't post what they said but it was down right nasty. It is all about jealousy though in the end. If he hadn;t been alsonso's team mate it is very likely they wouldn;t have said much at all.

Alonso was acting like a fool anyway - hardly giving the Spanish a good image .

Piffle · 04/02/2008 16:28

what about the abuse football teams have also suffered, rio ferdinand got called allsorts in Spain

MesaLoca · 04/02/2008 16:33

alonso proved himself to be a petulant child and the spanish are a bit embarassed that their idol isn't the shining start that they held hold him up as. In doing this they are showing the same traits themselves though.

Alsono can't be that happy about it, he lives in Oxford doesn't he? I suspect he will get a fair bit of stick if this continues.

marina · 04/02/2008 16:34

Alonso really has behaved like a prize idiot over all this, I agree
And yes, as I was typing just then piff I got a flashback - they have been vile to black British players haven't they

MesaLoca · 04/02/2008 16:35

I hope barcelona loses it's place on the calender. It is one of the most boring races of the season.

ilovespring · 04/02/2008 16:36

Despicable actions in Barcelona!

But let's remind ourselves of our own Ron Atkinson in our own home turf!

tribpot · 04/02/2008 21:10

Absolutely disgraceful. In any country. Lewis Hamilton is doing his best to beat everyone, be they Spanish, Finnish or British. Barcelona is my favourite city in the world. But I'm virtually not surprised by this kind of vitriol there.

MissCreant · 04/02/2008 21:15

Ds1 was talking about this today. Wasn't it in spain that people started making monkey noises when one of our players got the ball? I'm sure that was fairly recently. Disgraceful.

InLoveWithSweenyTodd · 05/02/2008 09:10

alonso is a twat, let's face it.
re the racists chants, Spain is just 20 years behind England. Dh tells me this used to happen in English football matches and it was erradicated. I am sure it will be in Spain too once that behaviour is penalised by the sports authorities.

ilovespring · 05/02/2008 21:26

Does anyone know what they were shouting?
