ANOTHER shooting in my area, getting scared to go out :(

A few months back I was walking to the shops and all the road near the shops was cordened off by the police. Turns out there had been a 'drive by' shooting

It horrified me because I walk there most days going to the shops or park and It makes me sick to think what could've happened if we were there at the wrong time.

So a few days ago we went shopping ont he bus another area was cordened off theres been another shooting, this time it was right next to the park

It only happened a few days ago and its all still taped up and police units there ect.

Both of these are within 1/2 mile of my home and in place we visit almost daily.

I actully feel reluctant to go to the shops or the park - even though its a perfect crisp and sunny day for it.

What kind of world is t when you cant take your children to the park for fear of guns?

Disenchanted, where are you? Will you say? I see you mentioned Moss Side and Moston on the other thread, I also put Moston/Harpurhey as I have personal experiance of those areas (don't usually admit to that) I live in Whitefield now.

bossykate · 01/02/2008 13:25

i lived in moss side for a while nearly (eek) 20 yrs ago just as gun crime was starting to creep in. it's a vile, vile place. i live in brixton now where shootings are sadly commonplace, but on the whole i don't feel scared going about my day to day business.

suwoo · 01/02/2008 13:39

My DH lived in Moss Side and we lived together in Old Trafford, so pretty near by. I didn't like going out in the dark in Moston though.

PenelopePitstops · 01/02/2008 15:08

live near there too, am moving opposite the park in question in september, its really scaring me tbh

Disenchanted · 01/02/2008 15:36

Not in Moston or Mossside

Im in Withington where both the shooting were.

But those places are equally bad,

I remember some papers labelling Manchester 'Gunchester' a few years ago, i laughed then because I had never really thought of it as a gun plenty place but since then its just got worse and worse!

Actully not equally bad, those places are alot worse but I can see this area getting that bad.

Disenchanted, yep they are so much worse, but its worrying that everywhere is getting as bad. The 'rough' places seem to expand until they encompass what were nice areas IYKWIM. It also happens the other way round though, eg Chorlton and Whalley Range.

bossykate · 01/02/2008 16:23

oh i used to live in chorlton too! i never lived anywhere nice in the fair city of mcr

suwoo · 01/02/2008 19:39

Nooooooooo. Chorlton IS nice!! chock a block with yummy mummys.

bossykate · 01/02/2008 19:58

ha, perhaps it's gentrified over the years

Rose76 · 04/02/2008 11:45

After thirteen years of being away from my home city of Manchester, my husband and I are considering moving back for the sake of our son. We live in Stoke Newington at the moment which is nice enough but too pricey for us so thinking of returning home to Chorlton. Please someone say some good things!!

suwoo · 04/02/2008 12:20

I said a nice thing about Chorlton! I would love to live there if we could afford it- had to move up to North Manchester due to being priced out of Chorlton, we live in Whitefield.

Rose76 · 04/02/2008 12:59

Thanks suwoo, you were the only one that made me feel it was the right thing to do! Think there are worries everywhere, certainly Hackney is no different. Any advice on Chorlton appreciated!

Disenchanted · 04/02/2008 13:05

Chorltons lovely - stay away from merseybank!

But the rest is really quite nice

i lived with my DP for a while in Chorlton and I would much rather live there! I get all nostalgic when I pass through, good shops, lovely independant shops too, alot of really good bars and resteraunts.

I think its great!

Rose76 · 04/02/2008 13:39

thanks! Having hard day as son just started nursery due to being back at work next week so having a northern escape plan getting me through the heartbreak!

suwoo · 04/02/2008 14:00

Town is fabulous now too, Rose76, have you been recently? The Arndale is lovely now (well, inside) and there are as good a shops as London.

Rose76 · 04/02/2008 14:32

Looking forward to coming back. Not been to town for a while but looking forward to a complete change.
