Am I the only one who is hoping there's going to be a mass exodus from Twitter? Musk is a billion reasons why people shouldn't be billionaires surely.

switch to Mastodon. all the cool kids are there now.

Muddays · 19/11/2022 23:47

@parietal thanks. I've just been reading several articles about it and it's reassuring to know that an arrogant, insanely wealthy megalomaniac can still be brought down by his own hubris.

Is this as negative as Twitter or a
More positive space?

WallaceinAnderland · 20/11/2022 00:16

Will not be sorry to see twitter go

HeddaGarbled · 20/11/2022 00:33

He wants the staff to leave. He’ll be fine. Twitter will be fine. Some people will lose their jobs. Mastodon will have a nice little boost which may or may not last.

catsonahottinroof · 20/11/2022 00:46

What I don't understand is why Mastodon is getting so much publicity - in every news story denigrating Twitter, it always seems to be Mastodon being touted as the alternative by the BBC, Guardian, etc. Surely there are other alternatives? I agree about Twitter being a cesspool but wonder about the agenda here.

Muddays · 20/11/2022 01:57

@catsonahottinroof yes, I agree. As with all things online, we need to tread cautiously, but twitter is over now, any vast forum that gets spooked is ultimately doomed. Stampedes are destructive and a difficult economic climate isn't going to make many hang around for a rebuild. Advertisers are running for the next anthill to squat on etc.

Yes, there are other alternatives, but Mastodon is seen as the leading one. It has seen a lot of growth this year, apparently fuelled by Musk's acquisition of Twitter. It is now gaining over half a million users per week. It is that growth that has led to it appearing in reports by the BBC, Guardian, etc. Clearly reporting helps fuel growth, but the growth started first. We only started hearing about Mastodon when it was already growing fast.

Tumblr is losing users.

Truth Social was founded by Trump. Enough said!

Other contenders (Discord, Cohost, Tribel) are too small to warrant a Wikipedia article or are not really Twitter replacements (Clubhouse, which is an audio chat app, and Substack, which is a platform for subscription newsletters).

So yes, there are other alternatives, but right now Mastodon appears the most likely to succeed in replacing Twitter.

TheShellBeach · 24/11/2022 09:26

As soon as Trump writes his first tweet I'll be out of there, and so will a large number of people.
It's the writing on the wall, as they say.

Soothsayer1 · 24/11/2022 12:44

Surely trump needs to stay on on truth social because he receives the advertising revenue from it and if he leaves there will be no revenue?
Plus he won't want to do anything that lines musk's pockets!

barneshome · 24/11/2022 13:09

I cannot understand what anyone gets from twatter just a load of ranting
I cant understand why people, do not have better things to do than look at twatter fb insa masta etc

Go for a run

purplethings · 24/11/2022 20:12

He posted a really offensive misogynistic meme recently so I blocked him. Thinking about leaving twitter altogether. I use it for current affairs but it's easy to just get stuck in a bubble.

NumberTheory · 26/11/2022 05:23

I get that Musk is a megalomaniac who acts like a toddler, and I’m not sad to see him fuck himself with his own ego. But I really don’t get why all these people who were happy with the cesspit Twitter was are suddenly up in arms that it’s a cesspit with Musk at the helm? Why did they think it was okay before Musk came along?

I agree. It's futile to debate with people who's thinking is one-dimensional, yet totally flexible when it suits. They're also likely to walk off when facts are involved in any reply to them.
