Why is there hardly any coverage on the news regarding what's happening in Gaza at present?

I'm horrified by what is going on and yet it barely gets a mention by our news channels (that I've seen so far!)

Yep. Very little interest anywhere it seems on what happens to the Palestinians.

SueBaroo · 28/01/2008 09:34

It's not on very much is it. If you've got access to the news channels there's a bit more, and Islam Channel news always covers it.

"Very little interest anywhere it seems on what happens to the Palestinians"

I totally disagree there is proportionally more coverage of the middle east than africa, afghanistan, iraq, iran, pakistan, india

well I think there is little interest in what happens in Darfur and Zimbabwe also. I think all these issues are scandalously neglected.

TwoIfBySea · 29/01/2008 10:36

Because Israel are the UKs allies and therefore nothing bad must be said about them?

My simplistic theory anyway.

RoxyMonoxide · 29/01/2008 10:51

Zimbabwe and Gaza.

It's horrendous, and almost next-to-nothing in the news.

I can't help but feel that unfavourable reporting of anything to do with Gaza/Palestine/Israel is often wilfully construed as anti-semitism.

Jimmy Carter is often accused of anti-semitism because he dares to question the decisions of the Israeli authorities and highlight the injustices happening to Palestinians. He is heavily involved in Habitat For Humanity and felt he couldn't ignore certain things that were happening in Gaza for the sake of good relations with Israel. Politicians (and associated press) tread a little too carefully in these situations sometimes.

Tell us something new!

in answer to the OP: because the US and UK are in bed with Israel and sell them arms. They do very nicely thank you. Nobody truly acts upon the revolting theft of land and human rights abuses commited daily by Israel against the Palestinians because the palestinians are dirt poor and have nothing to offer the west. Just like the poor bastards in Darfur.

And yes - because the Israelis can always pull their trump card and accuse their detractors and critics of being anti semitic. And they do.

80% of businesses in Gaza have collapsed in recent months, largely because of the Israeli blockade. If you want some detailsed coverage go to the new statesman website. John Pilger and Jeremy Bowen are good but you won't see their comments any where else as far as I can see.

Sad Sad

yes ruty I know. But we have been here before so often haven't we? I can hardly bring myself to post on threads like this as it upsets me too much.

Al Jazeera english tends to have a broader sweep of news, but I agree, it is barely given a nod on the more readily accessible news. I don't tend to watch it on the terrestrial broadcasts now, and it's easy to miss the 'weighting' of the news in those shorter programmes when you have access to the net and the 24 hour channels.
