I absolutely do believe that it is possible for a person who has committed a terrible crime to be rehabilitated and to subsequently become a valuable member of society and have good relationships with others. Whether this is the case with T&V I don't know.

spacedonkey · 01/12/2004 14:31

Thank you for that quote and link MM. This is all very sad.

tammylove · 01/12/2004 14:32

Interesting space im not sure i could trust them though.

Uwila · 01/12/2004 14:34

In Walton? Did this crime take place in Walton on Thames?

hercules · 01/12/2004 14:36

fastasleep · 01/12/2004 14:36

turquey · 01/12/2004 14:40

Excellent article mm. I had not heard that John Major quote before "Condemn a little more and understand a little less". OMG.

hercules · 01/12/2004 14:43

after reading that article does it makes the string em up crew feel any different?

JanH · 01/12/2004 14:44

Uwila, there is a part of Liverpool called Walton.

tammyloveschristmas · 01/12/2004 14:45

Honestly, No it doesnt, but only for the fact that im blinded by horror, fear and heartache to see anything but evil.

hercules · 01/12/2004 14:46

Evil? I've asked this before but please tell me what you mean by this?

I mean the evilness of the crime, it didnt matter who did it, what happened was unspeakable, i dont necesarily mean evil t&V i mean it was just too horrible to even begin to try to understand, i cant get my head around it.

Brilliant article mm, thanks for that. Blake Morrison is such a humane and wise writer.

Yes, it's heartening to see that not all journalists wanted to portray the "mob" view of monsters.

Gitta Sereny has also written sensitively on the Mary Bell case - she may well be mentioned already somewhere on this huge thread.

fastasleep · 01/12/2004 14:53

I just read MM's other article, and I think that the remorse is enough of a punishment, there can be no worse punishment than living with that guilt. Being hung drawn and quartered would be a welcome reprieve for me if I had to live with that.

JanH · 01/12/2004 14:54

Now there's a surprise.
