Is WW3 imminent?

Djj1986 · 28/06/2022 12:40

I’m petrified we are now heading into WW3 because of the news the past few days;

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10960221/Dont-appease-Putin-like-Hitler-New-Army-chief-warns-UK-faces-1937-moment.html

Ever since the start of the pandemic life has just felt so surreal. It’s never ending and this is a really big worry. This country have no hope of survival against Russia if this happens.

No.

gamerchick · 28/06/2022 12:47

I can't worry about something I have no control over. It's just wasted energy. Men shouldn't be in charge of the world IMO.

Stop reading the DM, they just scare people to make money

The UK has nuclear weapons. We're in NATO. Russia is not going to attack us. They can't even manage Ukraine right now.

Things are very worrying and will probably get worse but not WW3 worse

MissWired · 28/06/2022 12:53

Putin has had huge difficulty in invading Ukraine...what makes you think Russia can handle multiple opponents at the same time?

No chance.

SaintHelena · 28/06/2022 12:57

What annoys me is all these leaders spouting forth without a mention of the young men dying for SFA, a bit of war damaged land where nobody will want to live.

Evil.

TokyoSushi · 28/06/2022 13:00

Things are far from ideal, but no.

Look at all of the trouble that Putin has had with Ukraine. How do you think he'd get on with NATO?

Suzi888 · 28/06/2022 13:00

Who knows.

My friend who lives in the US thinks civil war could break out, things are scary. Lack of food due to lack of petrol etc.
Costs of living are going up and wages and benefits are static (pretty much).

It’s pointless dwelling and no-one has a crystal ball. If you are anxious I’d stop watching the news/social media.

SoftMallow · 28/06/2022 13:16

Well, I'm pretty scared. I think it's one possible outcome of several. Certainly we're in a new world to the one we grew up in. I hope we never find out but can somebody tell me what this might look like for the UK? (without the nuclear option!) A return to WWII living and Anderson shelters? Conscription? Or have things changed and will be different? What's happening in ukraine looks like history has been rolled back

MagicFox · 28/06/2022 13:18

General Sanders speech given today (link here: www.army.mod.uk/news-and-events/news/2022/06/rusi-land-warfare-conference-cgs-speech) is about mobilising the UK army in order to prevent a wider war

PinkestMoon · 29/06/2022 11:22

Are our children safe?

noblegiraffe · 29/06/2022 11:24

The military are looking for more funding so will be talking up threats.

Aposterhasnoname · 29/06/2022 11:41

Firstly, no WW3 is not imminent, and secondly we are members of NATO and have nuclear weapons, so we have every chance against Russia. In case it’s escaped your notice we are an island, they can’t just walk over the border like they did in Ukraine.

Igotjelly · 29/06/2022 11:44

In a nutshell no, WW3 is not in Most expert’s opinions imminent. Things are bad and I suspect a return to increased defence spending etc. is almost certain.

Igotjelly · 29/06/2022 11:44

And I second not reading the DM or any other scaremongering type papers.

bluelavender · 29/06/2022 12:04

WW3 is not imminent

Regional conflicts probably are unfortunately; that could turn into wars; particularly if access to food get more challenging (and war in Ukraine not helping with this)

The UK would be far better placed than many, many other countries to deal with conflict.

If you want to do something to help; fundraise for the Red Cross- they'll be needed a lot over the next decade

Trinity65 · 29/06/2022 12:05

OP
I went through what you are now in the 1980s
We were bombarded with it . From Drama's like Threads, When the Wind Blows, Testament and The Day After, to songs like Dancing with Tears in my Eyes, Two Tribes and others . I worried Yes
Now though, there is nothing we could do if they did drop a Nuke or a few of them,
I got obsessive and so scared back then, so much so I refuse to let it bother Me this way round.
Don't Fret.

The Ukrainian invasion is one of over 40 military conflicts going on, it's nowhere near the most deadly or disruptive to local people.

The DM and other right-wing papers are banging on about it because they think it gives Johnson a chance to do his Churchill impression and thus sweep under the carpet the many fuck-ups he has/is overseeing.

Kris02 · 29/06/2022 12:49

Max Hastings said a war with Russia is likely within the next few years. He is a historian who has written books on Vietnam, WW1 and WW2, and numerous other things. He is also a serious journalist, who covered the Falklands War and even edited The Daily Telegraph. In other words, he knows his stuff.

If it does kick off, I certainly wouldn’t risk MY life. Why would I fight for a country that hates itself? Any patriotism I had pretty much died during those BLM riots. The sight of the British cenotaph having to be protected by the police was the final straw.

PiffleWiffleWoozle · 29/06/2022 12:54

If it does kick off, I certainly wouldn’t risk MY life.

If a country like Russia goes to war with the U.K. some brave people will have to risk their lives to prevent Russia winning.

Unless you prefer living under the rule of Putin or similar, rather than in a democracy?

LemonSwan · 29/06/2022 13:05

I used to absolute terrified of Russia. Had an image in my head of scary looking men built like brick shit houses covered in tattoos who cage fight before breakfast, can survive minus 20 in just their underpants and have a pet bear.

I am not sure how I got to the above image because it’s terrifying and a hilarious image in equal measures.

Having seen Ukraine - it’s allayed my fears some what. Yes they have firepower for sure! But they don’t seem to have the tactical or on ground advantage.

These huge terrifying Russian men I imagined turned out to be skinny young boys who look like they haven’t eaten in a decade and couldn’t navigate themselves round a kitchen let alone a country. I actually feel sorry for them.

It seems too unreal. I keep saying to DP - ‘do you think it’s a trick, is he hiding his real army in the Siberian forest?’

Well let’s hope we never find out 😬
