had you not guessed who was on America's world tour list next.....

aloha · 22/11/2004 22:46

Hmmm.....i wonder if it's like the 'dirty bomb on undeground plot' that was also 'foiled' - only it was all rubbish. I feel SO cynical about all this.

Angeliz · 22/11/2004 22:56

I feel cynical too, especially having just watched Spooks!![smile}

I haven't seen the news so don't know about this report but surely Canary Wharf/Heathrow/Parliament etc are all possible targets anyway?

I've just returned from the US and my poor handbag is nearly radioactive, having been the subject of much investigation and x-raying. They seemed to think I had a laser pointer in it but could only find a pen torch and a credit card holder with metal corners, neither of which really fitted what showed up. Still, I guess I'm grateful they have sharpened up their act wrt to security.

suzywong · 23/11/2004 07:13

I can't say I actually blame Iran for bolstering its defences.

let's hope Tony Blair doesn't drag us further in to Bush's world policeman fantasies.

Over here PM John Howard has is nose right up Bush's arse despite the Australian Embassy in Jakarta having been attacked by terrorists.

hmb · 23/11/2004 07:19

Terrorists only have to 'win' once. Stopping them is an ongoing steady plod.

Being cynical is all well and fine. But would you have rather had certainty and had the plot suceed?

You can bet your boots that some terrorist wants to do this. I'm just very glad that someone takes the treat seriously and tries to do something about it.

And Iran wasn't 'improving its defences' it was enritching Uranium. I don't think that makes the world safer, regardless of who does it, do you?

No, and I didn't say that. The point I was making is that it is easy for us to by cynical about 'plots', however only one such 'plot' has to work for everyone to be pointing the finger and asking why more wasn't done to stop it.

It is amazing to me that people who can be (understandably) cynical about the West, can be utterly trusting of Iraq wanting to enrich Uranium. Do you realy belive it was to start up a nuclear energy program, with all the oil they are sitting on?

Uwila · 23/11/2004 17:30

Agree with HMB. It's so easy to point the finger when you don't really know what might have been.

It's not until you stand there watching the twin towers crumble that you say to yourself "oh shit, I'm vulnerable..."

We don't ever want to experience anything like that again. And hopefully todays news is a true and accurate message that our leaders have in fact prevented something similar in London.

hmb · 23/11/2004 17:31

Sorry, that should have read Iran, not Iraq (it has been a hard day)

Freckle · 23/11/2004 17:37

Has anyone else seen the front page of the Independent today? All about how TB is trying to frighten the bllcks off us in the run-up to the election. A bit like the US not voting out a sitting president in the middle of a war; TB is counting on us not wanting to vote in a new government in the face of imminent danger.

Cynical, but probably not far from the truth.

Uwila · 23/11/2004 18:05

Not sure the scaremonger accusation is anything more that an accusation.

It is after all possible that people voted for Bush because they like him, and not because he instilled them with fear.

Also, if you vote Blair out, who are you going to vote in? The Torries? Do you think they posses the qualities that you feel Blair lacks?

Freckle · 24/11/2004 14:40

I didn't claim those as my views; merely pointed out the newspaper's standpoint.

Uwila · 24/11/2004 14:53

Sorry if I misread, but I interpreted "but probably not far from the truth" as your opinion of the situation.

Anyway, I know not if the timing of this announcement was politically motivated. I just that is true and they have in fact foiled a terror plot. As I do not doubt for a second that there are lots of terrorist out there who would like to inflict massive horrorific scales of damage to London.
