I don’t know if anyone can help me, or I’m beyond help, in the last 24 hours this nuclear strike Russia and threatening the U.K. with if we supply more arms to Ukraine and at the same time liz truss states we will double down on more and harder weapons to Ukraine and Boris then chimes in any retaliation we will equally hit with our own, I am current sat on my bathroom floor crying because I can’t cope with the thought of nuclear war and what that means for me and my children, I don’t know what to do, how to cope if anyone could please help

We need to calm the anxiety and panic so switch off, watch cartoons with your kids and try the calm app to centre your breathing. I know that may seem harsh to say however many of us suffer from severe anxiety and once you are in that circle it can be a challenge to get out of.

What are your coping techniques?
You said or mentioned you did CBT?
Also say to yourself:

With your eyes closed say to to yourself slowly...

As your breathing in and out say: This is just a feeling and it will pass. Say it over and over again until you find your breathing is steady because it is just a feeling and it will pass.
If your anxiety is causing you problems you need to go back to your GP
Remember right now these irrational thoughts are very real to you however they are just that irrational

I was feeling a bit worried then I sang some duet Six musical songs with my 7 year old and if I get nuked I’ll die happy. That’s what life is about. Live it whilst you can

Scribbless99 · 22/09/2022 14:32

how likely do we
think after putins speech that putin sooner or later will nuke the uk? I’m not trying to scaremonger, I genuinely want to know thoughts.

I’d say chances are not zero.

Scribbless99 · 22/09/2022 16:04

Well chances are never zero, but are we thinking justified anxiety percentage’s or don’t worry too much

Igotjelly · 22/09/2022 16:05

i’ve been following pretty closely and would say no more reason to be anxious today than there was yesterday. The risk is still very low.

MagicFox · 22/09/2022 16:46

An attack on the UK is a de facto attack on the rest of Europe - how would france be impacted by a nuclear attack on the uk for example? As well as the US, France is also a nuclear power

OP there's an advanced line of thought that if you show any weakness to Putin it significantly encourages him and that does seem true. The line across all countries now seems to be that no-one will give an inch, because Putin will push farther if anyone does. This was a bargaining chip (threat of nuclear) he thought he would win with, but the world is tactically fighting back well (for the first time when it comes to Russia, IMO) by not backing down. Truss is doing it and so is everyone else (it just feels more crap and freewheeling when she does it because she's incompetent but I'm pretty sure this is part of a more sophisticated Western strategy).

This is a call IMO to those with power inside Russia - that this is still one man's war - and they need to be shown that tying themselves to him, no matter what benefits he promises them - are completely overshadowed by what will happen if he goes nuclear as the world will target Russia like never before. It's brinkmanship and yes, scary, but read these emboldened statements by Truss etc as heavily backed intelligence and joined up western strategy. People in the Kremlin can see if you get rid of Putin, there's no more one man's war. And that the cost attached to indulging him is getting less bearable by the hour.

Also OP I think you need new dosage of your anxiety meds as yes this is a scary time but it's controlling your life in a bad way and that's the definition of anxiety, isn't it? The anxiety controls you and not the other way round.

jennakong · 06/10/2022 20:33

Ironic that the US and UK invaded a sovereign nation themselves justifying it with some codswallop theory about WMD, isn't it. The threat now from a madman in Europe.

Perhaps the stakes are now so high that there comes a point when there is enough vested interest in Moscow to take Putin out. I think self-interest will win out here, his inner circle must know that they too will be indicted on multiple counts of war crimes and genocide. The only way of saving themselves is to turn on Putin as the architect of the operation. Hope so anyway.

Scribbless99 · 07/10/2022 17:12

I do find it extremely unsettling given Biden made remarks about if the war continues the way it’s going… and we have never been closer to since the Cuban missile crisis, especially off camera aswell… at this point I think he needs an off ramp because right now I am extremely anxious about what’s happening

Miracle29 · 13/10/2022 13:46

I was struggling with this a few months back when this started and I managed to get myself in a place where I thought we will be OK. I trust for us to be protected etc and it helps massively until I went on a news site this morning with a title that basically said there are calls for all Britain ro have iodine tablets and training, leaflets, drill.,bunkers etc and we are not prepared for war....reading this made my heart drop. I dint always believe what the news says but this for some reason stood out to me and I'm now scared again. Mainly for my children but I'm truly scares after reading that. Has anyone else seen it?

whenwillthemadnessend · 13/10/2022 20:45

To the most recent poster. Nothing on bbc in health or Ukraine if that helps

I was a teen in the 80s and was made to watch horrible traumatic films re the fallout and survival. Didn't help. Just made me more worried.

But nothing did happen

All we can do if carry on and hope the powers from within or Russian populations do the right thing and finish off the madman or sensible talks begin.

If your anxiety gets very bad. Please see a gp 💐💐 there's no harm in that.

Miracle29 · 20/10/2022 17:35

@whenwillthemadnessend thankyou for your reply. I tried taking some time out from reading articles but didn't really help like it normally would, I think it just feels like something is going to happen. I tried to read something today, totally unrelated and underneath was an article stating what would happen if a nuke was set off and another disgustingly saying what country would die on impact, through radiation or burn. Years ago I'd read this stuff and put it to one side but this time I can't shake the feeling something is going to happen. The news feeds I've been reading are the sun and daily mail if that helps. I was on the school run yesterday and overheard 2 older children talking about bunkers and survival stuff and it just seemed madness! I don't put the news on at home as I don't want to scare my youngest. It just seems everything I read something gloomy will follow.

I’m really sorry that you feel this way. It absolutely isn’t inevitable that something like that will happen.

For what it’s worth I think I read the article you’re talking about and it was talking about modelling from 2017. It’s scaremongering to get views. The media should be ashamed.

Genuinely I would avoid the Daily Mail and Sun, they’re unbelievably sensationalist and full of shite.

I don’t think it’s helpful to ignore the news at home, depending on how old the children are. I often speak with DD 10 about the war in an age appropriate way, so she is getting facts and not just bullshit from school.

MagicFox · 20/10/2022 18:36

I second jelly, do not read that sensationalist bullshit

Miracle29 · 20/10/2022 18:51

Thankyou for your replies. My little one is 6 and when everything started in ukerine she started to ask questions when the news was on such as is war coming here, will we be hurt and will daddy have to go away so I decided to turn the news off. I didn't really know how to explain things other than its not in this country and we are safe bit deep down had my own fears about it. Then all those fears went away and after seeing a few articles it came back again. I agree that some are scaremongering and I think what scares me is I don't know what is true and what isn't so believe the worst.
