have a look at this

But you do have to ask yourself :

why was this little 4yo out on her own, particularly at 4.30pm when it's dark!

Do children this young play out in the street alone? My ds is 10 and still doesn't unless with friends or something I am still trailing around with him as is dp and probably will be for a while. This story is terrifying

My eldest is 9 and she doesn't go out on her own - let alone my youngest (5yo).

I wouldn't let mine out in the dark, but I do let them go about 50 yards down the road to a grassy area to play sometimes. They are aged 8, nearly 7 and 4. The four yo is only allowed with her brothers but I suppose an occasion could arise when she was on her own. It makes you think, doesn't it?

Thank god the little girl screamed. Sadly around here some parents are quite happy to let their children roam around the estate after dark. Once they get to the age of about 3 they are sent out to play with older brothers and sisters. The estate is a dodgy area at the best of times.

The kids in my neighborhood all play outside by themselves, but not when it's dark (thankfully it doesn't get dark till 6pm here at the moment), and not that young. My oldest is 5. I won't let her play outside by herself. I let her play outside with her 9 year old cousin, and I let her walk down the street by herself to her aunt's house (8 houses away), but always call in advance so they're expecting her.
