While this has a tangential connection to Covid and probably should not be on this forum, this is yet another example of the thin (in many cases non-existent) approach to medical and research ethics that is taken in some places. The whole thing about the Salk partnering with China (where medical ethics is basically 'do what you want as long as the government is OK with it, and a government that is OK with putting a million people into camps because they're of a particular religion and of a different ethnicity is going to be OK with a lot of dodgy things) is a massive red flag. There is a real intrinsic value to HUMAN life, which is something many scientists have forgotten, and research like this debases and devalues that life.

@roguetomato I've started watching the video. It's very interesting and explained clearly.

TheClaws · 16/04/2021 09:01

And I do think it is relevant to Covid because the origins are still unclear and it is a fact that the Wuhan lab was involved with GOF research in sodding bats? Yes, there are plenty of opinions out there, but the fact is the WHO has been wilfully obstructed in their efforts to investigate by the CCCP and no firm conclusion can be drawn.

There is ZERO LINK between the article in the OP and the Wuhan lab and Covid. There hasn't even been any link established between the Wuhan lab and Covid, or bats and Covid, so yes, the origins are still unclear. The OP has done a great job creating a drama out of ... nothing really.

"Prof Izpisua Belmonte’s team worked with researchers in China, where much of the work was done to avoid legal issues."

"They were working with researchers from Kunming University of Science and Technology in Yunnan, China, who are also involved in this study."

There is a link to China and research done there to avoid "legal issues".

Are we not allowed to have a wider discussion about morals and ethics on research programmes when the pandemic originated there in the vicinity of a lab doing controversial and ethically dubious research with the potential for bio-weaponisation? These things are no longer in the realms of science fiction.

Thanks for the many reports about this thread. We're going to move it over to our In The News topic as we feel that's a better place for it.

@Losttheequipment Im not anti science. And what previous posts of mine are you referring to. Link please. These accusations seem to be levelled at anyone who doesnt want to permanently lock themselves in their home because of Covid.

Absolutely brilliant news from the US

The experiments described in the OP will be able to be conducted in the US again, saving many, many lives.

It was ridiculous that this work, which can be conducted in most other countries was being prevented in America.

I thought that in this country, the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act has banned this sort of activity.

strangeshapedpotato · 31/05/2021 07:44

Hopefully we can get this kind of nonsense shut down. Any experiments that change the natural order are clearly offensive to God.

There is no place for science or medicine in a god-fearing world - people should be content to die whenever God wants them to, and in the meantime just do exactly what they are told by religious leaders who speak to God regularly so know exactly what he wants.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 31/05/2021 07:51

This has nothing to do with coronavirus.

I find the potential abhorrent.
I feel the idea of continuing to strive to save lives at all costs sad; we have forgotten death is a part of life and should be valued and planned for as much as birth.
I feel the idea of the perfect baby, the perfect child, the perfect and eternal person isn’t healthy for society and places inordinate pressure on those who cannot live up to expectations. It also undervalues all that disabled people offer to the world.
Science is good. Relieving suffering and pain is good. Striving for perfection is less good.
