I remember watching that film late at night on my own when I was a kid. I think there was a scene in the barn that scared me.

Don't remember Chimera but did think of Charles Dance's First Born straight away from 1988 as geneticist Edward Forester. Plot was... a genius scientist obsessed with creating a human/ape hybrid. Told to destroy it when the experiment shut down but raised as his own - he ends up having a kid with his half-sister (I think CD was the sperm donor for the gorilla cells but couldn't say anything when Gor ended up with his daughter?) Then when Gordon is told, he meets the gorilla and she tears him to pieces. But it was years ago so I might have got bits wrong!

What does this have to do with coronavirus?

I thought there were international agreements prohibiting this sort of thing? Well I mean I know what they are. I suspect they have adhered to the letter but not the spirit.

There have been serious infections before, were they to do with interfering with nature?

If you're worried about interfering with nature then what about climate change, nuclear weapons... ?

And I am sure this is against the spirit of the international conventions to do with this sort of thing.

Why is it bizarre? When they claim it was done to try to understand disease. Covid is a disease.
I suspect the real reason ppl dont like me posting this here is because something like this questions the scientist worship that sometimes goes on on this board.

Starring... Jeff Goldblum, who coincidentally (OR NOT!) was the lead actor in The Fly, which just so happens to be all about a very gross chimera organism! It didn't end well for him.

I think that they created part human/part monkey many years ago - based on some of the colleagues I have shared a office kitchen with.

There is no way that this is to do with coronavirus. Embryos are used to study genetic diseases - there is a list in the article, which included down syndrome and type 1 diabetes. There is also a suggestion that future chimeras could be used to grow organs for transplant, although I suspect (and hope) that this will be blocked for ethical reasons.

It is a concern, although has nothing to do with the tv shows referenced, because 25 human cells is barely anything. That said, it is important to question why it is ok to do experiments on these embryos that would be illegal with human embryos. In fact, it sounds like it is illegal in most countries as it is said in the article that research took place in China to avoid the ethical issues.

This is clickbait and nothing to do with coronavirus. Scientists have use methods like this for decades - you've only decided to be scared of it now. Embryos like this cannot survive, if that is what worries you.
