I don't like the thought of it.

I remember watching that film late at night on my own when I was a kid. I think there was a scene in the barn that scared me.

MercyBooth · 16/04/2021 01:41

@HappyRaven Yes i remember the barn I just remember fragments of it. Its been a long time but it stuck in my mind.

“Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.” - Ian Malcolm, Jurassic Park

sykadelic · 16/04/2021 01:44

Why do you feel sick? It's a great advance is science. There are some ethical concerns that should be addressed, of course, but I certainly don't feel sick about it...

Whatsnewpussyhat · 16/04/2021 01:45

I remember watching chimera too.

Sick to even attempt it. Nothing surprises me anymore.

MercyBooth · 16/04/2021 01:51

I remember this as well.

Don't remember Chimera but did think of Charles Dance's First Born straight away from 1988 as geneticist Edward Forester. Plot was... a genius scientist obsessed with creating a human/ape hybrid. Told to destroy it when the experiment shut down but raised as his own - he ends up having a kid with his half-sister (I think CD was the sperm donor for the gorilla cells but couldn't say anything when Gor ended up with his daughter?) Then when Gordon is told, he meets the gorilla and she tears him to pieces. But it was years ago so I might have got bits wrong!

Losttheequipment · 16/04/2021 02:00

What does this have to do with coronavirus?

MercyBooth · 16/04/2021 02:02

@DoomscroIIer i was 15 then and i remember the gorilla beating him to death. Dont remember the half sister bit but its been a long time.

From the article

Despite the significant ethical concerns they say that chimera embryos can lead to a much better understanding of early human development, biology and disease

OP posts:
NiceGerbil · 16/04/2021 02:15

I don't understand why this is in coronavirus.

I thought there were international agreements prohibiting this sort of thing? Well I mean I know what they are. I suspect they have adhered to the letter but not the spirit.

Fucking hell this is all kinds of bad.

MercyBooth · 16/04/2021 02:18

I put it here because they are claiming it will help with understanding disease.

It makes me feel sick as well Sad we have interfered too much with nature. This worries me so much about what this could lead to

MercyBooth · 16/04/2021 02:36

And interfering with nature is what got us here in the fucking first place.

OP posts:
NiceGerbil · 16/04/2021 02:54

Interfering with nature how?

There have been serious infections before, were they to do with interfering with nature?

If you're worried about interfering with nature then what about climate change, nuclear weapons... ?

And I am sure this is against the spirit of the international conventions to do with this sort of thing.

You don't feel concern at the idea of experimentation on subjects that are part human?

What if they can survive? What if they could be 80% human 20% monkey?

You can't see the massive ethical can of worms here?

MercyBooth · 16/04/2021 03:07

Of course i can That is what im saying. It makes me bloody uncomfortable that they are doing this.

NiceGerbil · 16/04/2021 03:13

Sorry I think I got you mixed up with another poster!

Yes it's grim and I thought illegal.

MercyBooth · 16/04/2021 03:14

No worries @NiceGerbil

Posted in Coronavirus, bizarre

MercyBooth · 16/04/2021 03:21

Why is it bizarre? When they claim it was done to try to understand disease. Covid is a disease.
I suspect the real reason ppl dont like me posting this here is because something like this questions the scientist worship that sometimes goes on on this board.

@Aquamarine1029

“Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.” - Ian Malcolm, Jurassic Park
Starring... Jeff Goldblum, who coincidentally (OR NOT!) was the lead actor in The Fly, which just so happens to be all about a very gross chimera organism! It didn't end well for him.

Foreboding.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 16/04/2021 03:33

I think that they created part human/part monkey many years ago - based on some of the colleagues I have shared a office kitchen with.

Sbk28 · 16/04/2021 03:46

There is no way that this is to do with coronavirus. Embryos are used to study genetic diseases - there is a list in the article, which included down syndrome and type 1 diabetes. There is also a suggestion that future chimeras could be used to grow organs for transplant, although I suspect (and hope) that this will be blocked for ethical reasons.

It is a concern, although has nothing to do with the tv shows referenced, because 25 human cells is barely anything. That said, it is important to question why it is ok to do experiments on these embryos that would be illegal with human embryos. In fact, it sounds like it is illegal in most countries as it is said in the article that research took place in China to avoid the ethical issues.

TheClaws · 16/04/2021 05:01

This is clickbait and nothing to do with coronavirus. Scientists have use methods like this for decades - you've only decided to be scared of it now. Embryos like this cannot survive, if that is what worries you.
