I would like to know what people think about this as it’s really annoyed me. After the Eat Out To Help Out scheme a group of independent retailers want a SO2HO scheme running Monday to Wednesday and a half price offer with the government (I.e. all of us) footing this discount. Few points below:
- I don’t think people will need encouraging to browse in and buy things from independent retailers, if anything they are likely to enjoy a surge in demand with people being pent up for so long.
- Would the SO2HO save any jobs in smaller shops as surely this is one of the aims of such a scheme.
- A Monday to Wednesday scheme would, as was the case for EO2HO scheme, just mean pushing all the shoppers into the shops in a tighter time window each week, meaning more risk of transmission.
Yes, it would be a major boon to independent retailers who have been forced to close for so long but from an economy perspective I don’t think it makes sense. If retailers have survived this long their chances are only going to get better when lockdown lifts.
